Children’s books are an extremely important tool for families hoping to introduce French as a second language at home. However, it can be difficult to find books that are simple enough for second language learners. Ne vousinquiétez pas- I’m here to help. Here are a few tips for choosing books for your kids, followed by a visual list of my favourite French books for each age.  P.S. Many of the books listed below belong to a series (ex: Pat le chat, Je t’aime de la tête aux pieds, etc.) be sure to check out the other books in the series as well. Interactive books that have a fun texture, buttons to press, or pages that can be manipulated (ex: “Mon imagier de la famille” and that entire series has moving parts on each page, “Avec mondoigt” series encourages them to feel/trace the images with their fingers).

3. Including a parent who speak French - 123 Petits Pas Including a parent or caregiver who doesnt speak French can be difficult. But, guess what? You don’t need to know the language prior to joining your child’s learning journey. Yes, it can be hard to learn a second language as an adult as a lot of factors come into play… mainly time issues and the Another way to get involved in your child’s French learning is to let them teach you! Get them to teach you a song they learned, or to read a book to you. Ask them to practice presentations to you, or tell you about their day in French. They will gain practice and you will learn some new stuff too. You can also go to a cafe or restaurant and try ordering in French. One of our favourite cafes is Mamie Clafoutis, located in Westboro Village. You get a delicious treat and a great real world experience to practice your French with your child.
