  1. Finding the Right Private Investigator

  2. Hiring the right investigator can make the difference between a successful outcome and failure. Also, make sure you are prepared for the truth, the good news and the bad news. Ultimately, the best way to find a PI is by a referral; if you do not know anyone who has used a PI here are some resources so that you can compile a list of prospective candidates. • Check with a clerk at your local police department • Your state’s association of private investigation • Investigators working at the district attorney’s office • Criminal defence lawyers

  3. Once you have compiled your list then you can get to work on looking into each one so that you may find a trustworthy and qualified private investigator. Here are some things to look for when doing your research: • Education and training • Experience • Licensing/Certifications/Insurance • Do they have a clean record? • Ethics/good character • Can he/she testify in court if needed? • Clearly spells out fees

  4. Have expertise in your area of need/have handled similar cases • Make sure once you have made your choice that you feel comfortable with the PI you have chosen. If you feel that communication is lacking or that he/she is pressuring you in any way then you may want to keep looking. • After your initial consultation, he/she should be able to outline anticipated costs; if you choose to follow through make sure that you get a contract with all fees and expectations of both parties clearly stated. • Finding the right private investigator can be frustrating; following the above simple guidelines, using common sense, trusting your instincts, and doing the research instead of just picking a name out of a list will ultimately bring you to the right choice for your needs.
