Health Concerns Spur Action! • In the East South Central Region of the U.S., obesity has increased 52.1% since 1991 • Several southern states have the highestpercentage of youth at risk for overweight or overweight • AL is 2nd highest in U.S. for rate of obesity • Between 26-29% of Alabamians are obese • Mortality rates for diabetes, stroke and heart disease in Dallas County greatly exceeded state and national rates, 1998-’00 Selma News 10-11-07

  3. Overview of Selma NEWS • Selma City Schools CNP began reducing fat in school menus in ‘01 • Selma City BOE adopted the initiative to reduce unhealthy living in children beginning in Nov ‘04 Selma News 10-11-07

  6. Selma NEWS Activities • Established school wellness teams with multiple constituents • Conducted SHI assessment ‘05 • Planned interventions based on results • Received pilot funds from AGI; submitted multiple grant applications Selma News 10-11-07

Selma NEWS Activities • Expanded breakfast program • Replaced unhealthy items with nutritious items in vending and fund raising • Developed “best practice” menus • Fewer total calories • Increased offerings of fruits and vegetables • Reduced sodium and fats • Offered water and juices daily • Improved extended day snacks Selma News 10-11-07

Selma NEWS Activities • Restructured recess with new activities correlating to AL PE COS • Developed alternative fitness activities for students with medical exemptions • Enhanced teachers’ knowledge of fitness and wellness activities • Increased active time during PE classes Selma News 10-11-07

  9. Selma NEWS Activities • Held first health “Teach-in” day in ‘06 • Participated in ’05 county health fair and ’06 Family Wellness Day with art contest • Provided professional development for Alabama Health Education COS Selma News 10-11-07

  10. Healthy Living Policy • Selma City BOE approved for first reading the Wellness through Nutrition and Physical Activity Policy in April 2006 • Final approval granted May 2006 • Began parent and community education • Community presentations • Student artwork displayed Selma News 10-11-07

  11. Response to Health Concerns • WCCS faculty & student nurses assessed ht, wt, BMI & BP of all students in pilot schools • CCN assessed blood glucose, anemia, cholesterol of at-risk children with assistance from UAB & CCF • Selma NEWS provided parent education and referrals Selma News 10-11-07

  12. Expanding Selma NEWS • Include all Selma Schools in ’07 • Received SDE Wellness Mini-Grant • Assess needs & assets (nutrition, fundraising, physical activity) • Continue health assessments with new partners • Enhance student health and physical education • Plan community outreach program for family education at Selma Mall Selma News 10-11-07
