The Law • 2 types • Criminal lawdealing with wrongs against a person, property, or society • Practicing without a license • Misuse of narcotics • Theft • Murder • Civil law: deals with legal relationships between people and protection of a persons’ rights • Contracts • Torts:A wrongful act that does not involve a contract

  4. Crimes • Malpractice: providing improper or unprofessional treatment or care • Liability insurance: protection providers can purchase in the case of a malpractice suit • EXPEN$IVE! • Examples?

  5. Crimes • Negligence: failure to provide care that is normally expected of a person equally trained in that particular situation, resulting in injury to the patient • Examples?

Crimes • Assault: can include a threat or attempt to injure • Battery: unlawful touch of another without their consent • Informed consent! • What did that mean again? • Protocol for accepting written or verbal • Surgery, treatment for minors, invasive procedure = written consent needed • Examples?
