  3. Overview of the Empires • Umayyad and Abbasids • Within 300 years, Middle East, N. Africa, and S. Asia – fell to armies of Islam • Weaknesses/decline of Persian/Byzantine Empire helped in spread

  4. Islamic Expansion

  5. Overview • The Islamic Dynasties were responsible for preserving the learning of the ancient Greeks, Romans, and Persians • The writings of Plato and Aristotle were translated into Arabic

  6. Money System • Gold and silver coins standard monetary unit • Introduced idea of credit

  7. Umayyad Dynasty (661-750) • Emphasized Arab ethnicity over adherence to Islam • Converts to Islam were considered inferior

  8. Umayyad Dynasty • Freedom of worship for Jews and Christians • These groups were sometimes taxed on property and charity

  9. Fall of the Umayyad's • Ruling families lived excessively prompting riots and ultimately their downfall

  10. Conquests • Pushed east to borders of India & China • Umayyad capital is Damascus • 747 A.D. – anti-Umayyad dynasty is established (Abbasid) • Abbasid capital is Baghdad

  11. Abbasid Dynasty (750-945) • Succession disputes • Converts were appreciated – education available and career advancement • Shia dissention • Civil violence drains imperial treasury • Revolts and slavery increased • Trade with the western Mediterranean to China

  14. Medicine • Optic surgery as specialty • Human anatomy studied in detail • Hospitals best in the world

Women In Islam • Early days of Islam: women were not required to wear the veil & not secluded • Up to four wives allowed since the time of Muhammad; women - only one husband • In general Islamic women had more rights than other women of the same time • Eventual isolation created barriers to acceptance of Islam, especially in Africa
