  1. Springs and Hooke’s Law • Springs can push or pull when stretched or compressed in order for the spring to return to its equilibrium length • Hooke’s Law describes the strength of the force of the spring

Hooke’s Law • k is called the spring constantit describes how “stiff” the spring is (stiffer spring  higher k) • The negative sign gives the direction of the springs pull/push… it is in the opposite direction of the stretch or compression • If you only need magnitude, drop the negative sign and use F = kx

  3. Example 6-7 A bulldozer stretches a spring with a spring constant of 1300 N/m a distance of 0.45 m in the positive x-direction. Find the magnitude and direction of the force that the spring exerts on both the wall and the bulldozer.
