  1. BIO 302: Cell & Molecular Biology Course detail: Semester: Spring 2015 Class size: 20-25 students Students: Mainly biology majors / Chemistry minors; Juniors / Seniors Post baccalaureate Interests: Grad school/Med school/ PA/ PT/ Pharmacy Motivation / Interest level:

  2. Alignment grid: Interrelationship between cellular organelles

  3. Castle top: Interrelationship between cellular organelles Monday Wednesday Friday Activity 1: Student list organelles / function Activity 2: Class discussion on function of lysosome; what happens when things go wrong? (Students develop a concept map.) Activity 3: Class discussion on how the loss of function in the lysosome affects the mitochondria. (Students develop a concept map.) Students are given the paper on lysosomal disorders. Activity 4: Class discussion on the information presented in the paper regarding the involvement of lysosome & mitochondria in the causation of the disease. In class Sat / Sunday Wednesday Tuesday LearnSmart assignment: c) Reflective question: Is it important for physicians to understand the cellular basis of disease? Brainstorm ideas about how this might affect the mitochondria. Post main ideas online. Guided reading assignment: Specific questions are posted online with hints. Out of class

  4. Activity 1; Step 1: This is a guided activity where the instructor offers guidance throughout the course of the assignment (brainstorm ideas, discussions-on the board, discuss as a class and in individual groups). • What is the function of the lysosome? • What happens when things go right? (Functional) • What cellular processes are affected? • What happens when things go wrong? (Non-Functional) • What cellular processes are affected? • Why is it important for the cell? • Why is it important for the cell? • Why is this cellular process important for the organism? • Why is this cellular process important for the organism?

  5. Activity 1; Step 2: This is a guided activity where the instructor offers guidance throughout the course of the assignment (brainstorm ideas, discussions-on the board, discuss as a class and in individual groups). • Does the function of the lysosome have an effect on the mitochondria? • What happens when things go right? (Functional) • What cellular processes are affected? • What happens when things go right? (Functional) • What cellular processes are affected? • Why is it important for the cell? • Why is it important for the cell? • Why is this cellular process important for the organism? • Why is this cellular process important for the organism?

  6. Interrelationship between cellular organelles • Organism • Organism • Cell • Cell • Cellular process • Cellular process • Lysosome • Mitochondria

  7. Research Paper: Role of lysosome • Learning objective: Apply the understanding of the interrelationship between cellular organelles to evaluate their role in disease. • Research and submit a detailed report on the role of lysosome in the causation of neurodegenerative disease using the following guidelines: • Why is the presence of a functional lysosome important to the cell? • What are the cellular processes affected when the lysosome is not functional? How does it affect the cell? How does it affect the organism? • What other cell organelle is affected? How does this impact other cellular processes? • Briefly discuss how this can lead to neurodegenerative disease. • ** References: You must have at least 2-3 sources besides the paper that you are discussing in detail. !!No Wikipedia!!

  8. Timeline for submission of assignments This assignment is Due on 25 March 2015 Please submit the assignment online and also turn in a printed copy.Late submissions will not be accepted.
