  1. Right time, right place: Alcohol-harm reduction strategies with children and young peopleYouth Policy project

  2. 11-15 year old consumption

  3. Under 18 hospital admissions and consumption trends

  4. Key findings • Last 7 years - 92,220 children and young people admitted to hospital for alcohol-related conditions • 32% increase in admissions between 2002-07 • Last 5 years- LAS responded to 11,780 alcohol-related under 18 call-outs at an estimated cost of over £2.5million • 2007-08 alcohol-related impact of underage drinkers on health estimated to cost at least £19million

  5. Consultation key findings • There is a need for youth specific tools and resources when identifying and delivering alcohol interventions • Greater joined up working between emergency health staff and substance misuse services • More investment in preventative work • Enforcement techniques to tackle alcohol consumption do not work

  6. Recommendations • Greater research into identification and intervention with young people • Earlier identification of ‘risky’ drinkers by skilling up the children & young people’s workforce

  7. Recommendations • Alcohol-related contact with emergency services should result in the offer of access tailored and targeted information, advice and support • Enforcement agencies, PCSO’s in particular, need to work in partnership with local substance misuse services and youth agencies

  8. Looking forward • Marketing- with a focus on digital marketing • Leading into a campaign in the third year of the project
