  2. What does TCP/IP stand for and what does it do? • TCP/IP stands for Transmission Control Protocol/Internet Protocol, which is a set of networking protocols that allows two or more computers to communicate. The Defense Data Network, part of the Department of Defense, developed TCP/IP, and it has been widely adopted as a networking standard.

  3. What does IP address stand for and what is it? • an IP address (Internet Protocol address) is a unique identifier that distinguishes one device from any other on a TCP/IP-based computer network, such as the Internet. The IP address provides enough information to route data to that specific computer from any other computer on the network. In the case of the Internet, this enables you to communicate with web servers, instant messaging servers and other computers all over the world.

  4. What is an ISP? • An ISP (Internet Service Provider) is a company that collects a monthly or yearly fee in exchange for providing the subscriber with Internet access.

  5. What does DNS stand for and what is it? • The acronym DNS stands for Domain Name System. A domain is a unique address on the Web that identifies one particular Web site. The Domain Name System is the unique set of domain name records; it transcribes the textual domain names (such as www.google.com) into their numeric equivalents, i.e., IP addresses, in order to make it easier for computer networks to find them via numerical computer languages/protocols.

  6. What does URL stand for and what is it? • URL is referred to as the Universal Resource Locater which is the address to find resources on the Internet. The first part of an URL is the protocol identifier which tells you which protocol to use and the second part is the domain or IP address of where the resource page is found.

  7. What is a search engine? • Basically, a search engine is a software program that searches for sites based on the words that you designate as search terms. Search engines look through their own databases of information in order to find what it is that you are looking for.

  8. What is a cookie? • Cookies are small files that websites put on your computer hard disk drive when you first visit.

  9. How many people have internet access at home in Canada? The USA? The World? • Canada is the second largest country in the world after Russia. Its population is however only about one-fifth of Russia's. Nearly 90% of Canadians live within 200 km of the border with the United States, which means that Canada contains vast expanses of wilderness to the north. The relationship to its powerful neighbour is a defining factor for Canada. The United States and Canada have the world's largest trading relationship. • Latest Population Estimate:34,030,589 population estimate for 2011, according to US Census Bureau.Latest Country GNI Estimate:GNI per capita was US$ 32,600 for 2006, according to the World Bank.Country Area (Size):9,976,137 sq km ( 3,850,789 square miles) - Pop. Density is 3 persons per sq km.

  10. Who invented/created the internet and for what purpose? • Vannevar Bush wrote the first visionary description of the potential uses for information technology with his description of the "memex" automated library system. • Norbert Wiener invented the field of Cybernetics, inspiring future researchers to focus on the use of technology to extend human capabilities. • The 1956 Dartmouth Artificial Intelligence conference crystallized the concept that technology was improving at an exponential rate, and provided the first serious consideration of the consequences. • Marshall McLuhan made the idea of a global village interconnected by an electronic nervous system part of our popular culture.

  11. Who invented/created the internet and for what purpose?Continued: • In 1957, the Soviet Union launched the first satellite, Sputnik I, triggering US President Dwight Eisenhower to create the ARPA agency to regain the technological lead in the arms race. ARPA appointed J.C.R. Licklider to head the new IPTO organization with a mandate to further the research of the SAGE program and help protect the US against a space-based nuclear attack. Licklider evangelized within the IPTO about the potential benefits of a country-wide communications network, influencing his successors to hire Lawrence Roberts to implement his vision.
