3. Living on -campus is so much more than sleeping and eating within close proximity to your classes . • While living on campus, we want to provide residents with an educational advantage. This means helping them develop and strengthen their skill sets in: • Verbal & Interpersonal Communication • Group Facilitation • Team Work • Self Confidence • Autonomy & Independence • Cultural Awareness and Appreciation

4. So how do we help our residents develop these skill sets? We must encourage them to: GET INVOLVED • Residents should get involved in 3 areas, the : • Residence Hall Community • UIC Community • Example: student clubs & academic organizations • Chicago Community • Example: volunteering at PAWS animal shelter

5. This training module is about the Leadership opportunities in Campus Housing, so we will focus on the following areas of involvement: • RHA • NRHH • Conferences • Hall Council • Project Lead C HC

6. Residence Hall Association HC C

7. HC WHAT IS RHA? C • The Residence Hall Association (RHA) at UIC is a student-lead group within Campus Housing. • Every resident living in Campus Housing is automatically a member of RHA • RHA’s mission: • Provide social and educational opportunities ( through programs and meetings) for all residents • Help foster relationships among residents • Provide Leadership and Conference Opportunities throughout the year • Voice the concerns of residents

8. RHA MEETINGS HC C RHA hosts meetings every Wednesday in the Rathskellar, below the Atrium. The goal of these meetings are to provide educational and social opportunities. At each meeting you can expect: • Hall Reports/RHA Informational & Business Items • Interactive-Themed Meetings • Sex in the Dark (Sexual Health) • Sign Language • Healthy Eating • Fire Safety • Personal Safety- both living on campus & while exploring the city • Weekly raffle prizes • Free Food • For each meeting a resident attends, they earn an “RHA Buck”. At the end of the year, residents trade in RHA Bucks for raffle tickets and win prizes.

9. How Can Residents Get Involved? HC C • All residents living in campus housing are eligible and invited to attend Wednesday General Assembly meetings, and attend all events • In order to serve as an Executive Board Member of RHA, you must: • Have lived on campus for at least one semester • Plan to reside in Campus Housing for the next two semesters • Have a minimum grade point average of 2.5/4.0 scale.

What is NRHH? • The National Residence Hall Honorary (NRHH) is representative of the top 1% of student leaders in Campus Housing based on GPA and involvement. • NRHH was established by the National Association of College and University Residence Halls (NACURH) in order to recognize outstanding efforts of residents across the nation. • Meetings- • NRHH has “Closed Meetings” (only for current chapter members) the 1st and 3rd Tuesday of every month • NRHH has Open Meetings (for any current resident) scheduled through the year • NRHH conducts all business based off of their foundational four pillars HC C

12. The Four Pillars of NRHH • Leadership • Attend regional, state, and national leadership conferences for free through NRHH and RHA! Get to know student leaders from other universities while strengthening your leadership skills and learning new programming ideas! • Community Service • Volunteer your time in the Chicago community! Past events includes passing water at the Chicago Marathon, serving dinner at The Ronald McDonald House, and holding fundraisers for organizations such as the American Cancer Society and the Dream for Kids Foundation. • Recognition • NRHH recognizes student leaders through the “Of The Month” (OTM) program. Each month, residents all over campus write OTMS for deserving individuals and groups on campus in numerous categories. • Academics • As the top 1% of leaders on campus, the National Residence Hall Honorary requires that members maintain a minimum 2.5/4.0 GPA. 13. How Can Residents Get Involved? • In order to be a member of NRHH, you must: • Have lived on campus for at least one semester • Plan to reside in Campus Housing for the next two semesters • Have a minimum grade point average of 2.5/4.0 scale. • We are also looking for students who have been active members of the Residence Life and the campus at large. • Members are required to earn 18 points by: • Attending chapter meetings • Writing Of-The-Month (OTM) award nominations • Participating in service events • Being a part of a sub-committee HC C

14. HC C Conferences • Residents will have many opportunities to attend student conferences. Conferences are a great opportunity to learn: • Learn information and have fun • Gain new perspectives • Network with professional staff members • Meet other students in similar leadership positions • Check out some of the conferences we attend below: • ISRAA (Illinois State Resident Assistant Association) • CASCHA (Chicago Area Student and Campus Housing Association) • RAFSAP (Resident Assistant & Future Student Affairs Professionals) • SALT (Student Affairs Leaders of Tomorrow) • NACURH (National Association of College and University Residence Halls) • GLACURH (Great Lakes Affiliate of College and University Residence Halls) • IRHA (Illinois Residence Hall Association)

15. HC C How Can Residents Get Involved? • Each conference will have a separate application process • Application processes usually ask candidates to complete a paper application and an interview • Application timelines will be communicated to residents as the conference date draws near • Residents will be told who to submit applications to • Usually application processes are run by the NRHH/RHA Communications Coordinators.

Hall Council • Involvement in your Hall Council will: Help you make connections with other residents Develop leadership skills Gain event planning skills Improve public speaking skills Give you access to professional staff members Build your resume • Every resident is a member of Hall Council • Hall Council holds regular meetings that are open to all residents of the hall/area to discuss programs, resident concerns and community issues. • Step up your membership and join the Executive Board. The Hall Council E-Board consists of residents within a building/area who are elected by their peers or appointed by staff. • Hall Council E-Board manages a budget to support programs and initiatives within their communities. 17. How Can Residents Get Involved? EXECUTIVE BOARD: • Residents serve in Executive Board positions for one academic year. RDs will have applications ready for distribution in August. The election process will take place within the first 3 weeks of the fall semester. HALL COUNCIL EXECUTIVE BOARD POSITIONS: • President • Vice President • Treasurer • Secretary • Vice President of Programming • Vice President of Hall & Dining Improvements • Two RHA Representatives FLOOR POSITIONS: • In the Fall Semester RAs/PMs will hold elections on each floor for the following positions: • Community President • Community Vice President HC C

18. Project LEAD is a three day program of workshops designed specifically to assist students in developing leadership skills and getting involved on campus from day one. This program allows first-year and transfer students to move in early and get a head start adjusting to UIC and living on campus. HC C

19. How Can Residents Get Involved? Incoming Freshmen will receive information about registration over the summer. The Project Lead application is completed on the Campus Housing website at: https://www.housing.uic.edu/pros/project-lead.php Project LEAD participants will receive a t–shirt and meals for the duration of the program. Registration cost is $80, and scholarships are available if financial need can be demonstrated. . HC C
