  2. Origin OfThe Inspector General The concept of the Inspector General came about when an inspector of infantry and an inspector of cavalry were appointed by Louis 14th, King of France. (1643-1715)

  3. The Inspector General “The IG must have a horse and some soldiers to attend him and all the rest are commanded to obey and assist, or else the Army will suffer. For he is but one and must correct many, therefore, he cannot be beloved . . .” Article of War from King Charles I (circa 1629)

  4. The Inspector General(CAP Version) “The IG must have a COMPUTER AND E-MAIL and some LAWYERS to HELP him and all the rest SHOULD COOPERATE and assist, or else the CIVIL AIR PATROL will suffer. For THE IG is but one and must correct many, therefore, he PROBABLY WILL NOT be beloved . . .”

Inspector General Origin in America During a staff meeting with his 14 general officers in October 1777, General George Washington directed the establishment of an Inspector General for the Army. British General Charles Cornwallis surrenders to American General George Washington at Yorktown, Virginia, on October 19, 1781, thus ending the American Revolution.

  6. Inspector General Origin in America Baron Frederick von Steuben was accepted on a trial basis by General Washington and reported for duty at Valley Forge in the winter of 1778. Steuben known as the “father of the Inspector General System,” significantly influenced the Army’s ability to fight wars and win.

Inspector General Origin in America • The use of the Inspector General system greatly improved following the Civil War, when the War Department published an order defining the duties of the IG • The IG duties to inspect units deploying for combat overseas resurfaced during World War I and World War II

United States Air Force Inspector General • The birth of the Air Force Inspector General mission occurred on January 6, 1948, as The Office of the Inspector General of the United States Air Force • Major General Hugh Knerr was appointed by General Carl A. Spaatz as the first Inspector General of the Air Force • An important legacy left by General Knerr is the enduring application of the best American business practices and the idea of the defense of the public trust from the very beginnings of the Air Force. That legacy lives on in today’s Air Force.

Civil Air PatrolInspector General • The first Civil Air Patrol Inspector General was Colonel Nicholas (Doc) Knutz appointed in 1997 • Doc Knutz was given no budget and no staff • Colonel Duddly Hargrove was appointed in 2000 to succeed Doc Knutz as the second CAP Inspector General • Colonel Hargrove was directed to organize a national college for training CAP Inspectors General • From the CAP Inspector General College 2000 came our current CAP Inspector General program
