  3. Having a Starting Point

  4. Getting Started The Audit

  5. Collecting Your Sources of Information I found out that the best way to start the goal setting process is to collect all of the information you may need prior to starting. Some information and sources you may want to collect are: • DFI Reports / Retentions • WESTEST • ACT Explore / Plan • Attendance • Graduation Rates • Discipline Reports

  6. Continued • Numbers Taking AP / Dual Credit Classes • Number s Taking ASVAB • Results From Other Previous Surveys • FAFSA Completion Numbers • Self Evaluation There are many other sources of information and data that may be available to you that would be helpful.

  7. What Next? What we found to be helpful was to focus on two areas were we could effect change in at our school: • The Counseling Program • Student Impact Your goals can be written from these two focus areas

  8. Counseling Program Goal In collaboration with your Principal and using the program audit, you can evaluate your school’s counseling program and develop a goal from that assessment. One of goals that I am using this year is based on the program audit and Standard 3 • Function 3A: PROGRAM RESULTS • The professional school counselor uses data to measure the results impact of the school counseling program. • Indicator 3A1 - Collects Data - The professional school counselor gathers, analyzes, and uses multiple forms of data (results, process, and perception) to plan and design program improvement.

  9. Goal At least 95% of all 9th and 10th grade students will complete the school student needs assessment by October 31, 2012. Responsible Person’s: (Counselor, SS Teachers) Time Frame: (By October 31, 2012) Measure of Success: (Number of Completed Surveys)

  10. Evaluation Cheat Sheet These are just a few suggestions I would have for anyone starting the new counselor evaluation program: • Review the standards and evaluation guide • Complete Self Evaluation & Program Audit • Complete the Three Tier Prevention Model • Review data from previous school year • Meet with school administrator • Develop at least 2-3 goals (One student impact, others can be program related) & create work plan

  11. Resources • WV School Counselor Model and Implementation Resources (WVDE School Counselor Web Page) • West Virginia School Counselor Model 2012 • West Virginia School Counselor Performance Standards Handbook • School Counseling Program Audit • West Virginia School Counselor Performance Standards, Functions & Indicators • Standards Self Assessment and Evidence Form • School Counseling Work Plan Template • 3 Tier Program Delivery School Assessment Tool • Curriculum Plan (6-8 Sample) • Student Standards Checklist (Sample)

  12. Personal Experience With The New Evaluation My overall experience has been positive . I like the self assessment and program evaluation as they are both good assessment tools. I also like that counselors write their own goals and now can show documentation of what we do. The only piece of the evaluation process that caused me frustration was the amount of forms and what order they must be completed.
