  3. Judul • AN ANALYSIS OF THE FUNCTIONS OF INDONESIAN - ENGLISH CODE SWITCHING IN TEACHING ENGLISH AS A FOREIGN LANGUAGE IN A CLASSROOM CONTEXT (The Case Study of English Teachers in SMP Negeri 1 Godong, Grobogan)

  4. Abstrak • Teaching English as a foreign language is not easy. Besides mastering English, teachers should be able to communicate it with their students successfully in conducting teaching and learning process. In this final project, the writer wants to analyze code switching as one strategy to help teachers maintain communication between them and their students. The aims of this study are, first to describe the Indonesian – English code switching found in teaching English as a foreign language done by the English teacher in SMP Negeri 1 Godong and second to describe the dominant function of Indonesian - English code switching in Teaching English as a foreign language by the English Teacher in SMP Negeri 1 Godong. The writer conducted the qualitative approach. The data were 74 utterances raised by the English teacher in two different classes (VII F and VIII A) with different topics. Then, the data were transcribed and classified into their functions in a classroom as proposed by Matson and Burenhult and Huerta et. al. The study found out that the teacher used all code switching functions in a classroom proposed by Matson and Burenhult and Huerta et. al. They were the affective function (13.51%), the emphasis function (27.02%), the addressee specification function (21.62%), the clarification function (18.92%) and the elaboration function (18.92%). The percentage of Indonesian – English code switching found in teaching English as a foreign language in the classroom is 44.58% and the dominant function of Indonesian – English code switching is the emphasis function (27.02%). It means that almost a half of the teaching English process used Indonesian – English code switching. Considering the result, the writer concluded that code switching was a useful strategy for teaching English. However, the writer would like to suggest that teachers should make students to be accustomed to speak and listen to English language correctly and appropriately by reducing the Indonesian language role in a classroom. Besides, teachers also need to build students’ motivation, desire and willingness to learn English much better through the teacher’s effective and strategic conversation in the classroom as well as outside of the classroom.
