  2. Jefferson’s Early Years • Born in Shadwell, VA , 1743 • Studied law at William and Mary College • Married Martha Wayles Skelton • Had six daughters • Built Monticello near Charlottesville, VA • Drafted Declaration ofIndependence, 1776

  3. Jefferson’s Later Years • Served as Governor of Virginia 1779-81 • Served as 3rd President of United States, 1801-09 • Concluded Louisiana Purchase, 1803 • Contributed private library to Congress, 1815 • Founded the University of Virginia, 1817 • Died at Monticello, 1826

Jefferson, Lover of Books • During War of 1812, Capitol building burned • 3,000 volumes in Library of Congress destroyed • Jefferson sold private collection to Congress • 1886, present Library of Congress built • 1980, building renamed the Thomas Jefferson Building. Famous Jefferson quote: “I cannot live without books.”
