  2. PURPOSE We all have our own reasons for being part of this event. Some of these reasons are: • It’s a challenge for all involved • Inspire children and youth on human potential • Learn the importance of teamwork and effort in support of a common goal • Develop empathy for others, especially those in need • Make connections between Canadians of all ages, backgrounds and regions • Learn about and experience the vastness, beauty and diversity of our country • Celebrate the 10th anniversary of the GGSCF

  3. CAUSE We are “…children helping children…”, and through this event, we wish to help: • Children in Canada through - Children’s Hospitals in Canada • Newfoundland - Janeway Children’s Hospital Foundation • Nova Scotia - IWK Health Centre Foundation • Prince Edward Island - • New Brunswick - • Quebec - The Montreal Children’s Hospital Foundation • Ontario - Sick Kids Foundation • Manitoba - Children’s Hospital Foundation of Manitoba • Saskatchewan - Children’s Health & Hospital Foundation of Saskatchewan • Alberta - Children’s Hospital Foundation • British Columbia - Surrey Memorial Hospital • Children Overseas through Plan Canada • Project for a health program in Liberia, Africa • Minimum Fundraising Goal of $110,000, to be divided equally amongst the 11 individual causes

  4. LOGISTICS How is an event of this magnitude carried out? TEAMWORK! • The Run has been organized into three sections, and will be managed in coordination with three teams • Each section is about 2500km and will take about 3 weeks to complete. WEST TEAM August 8th , Portage La Prairie, MB – Augst 30th, Vancouver, BC EAST TEAM July 1st, St. John’s, NF - July 18th, Brockville, ON CENTRAL TEAM July 19th, Brockville, ON- August 8th , Portage La Prairie, MB

  5. LOGISTICS Each regional section will have two teams to split the daily route and run. In addition, there will also be a base team, located in Toronto, along with other local city teams.

  6. RUN FORMAT • Relay Runners Vehicle • Will carry the other 9 runners • There will be one runner at a time on the road • Each Runner will run approximately 500 meters to 1000 meters at a time based on ability • Runners will be replaced by the next runner from the Relay Runners Vehicle • The previous runner will rest up in Vehicle 2 until his/her next turn. • The runners will continue to rotate as needed. The Run will be completed in a relay format • Run Flag Vehicle • Will remain ahead of the runner on the road at all times • Will carry the Canadian Flag • Two drivers who will control the run and route • Will contain a first aid kit, local hospital information, maps, cell phones, etc

  7. SAFETY We realize the risks and challenges involved, and have set strict safety standards for all participants and volunteers to follow: • Our first option is to be running on a sidewalk, if one exists. • Where there is no sidewalk, but there is a curb the runner would run on the boulevard. • Where there is no curb, the runner would be on the shoulder between the two slowly moving vehicles. • Where there are other extreme hazards (dangerous bends, road works, no shoulder etc.) the section may be omitted from the run for the safety of our runners. In addition to being safe on the road, here are some other safety precautions we’ll be taking: • Make sure all our Run vehicles would be visible to oncoming traffic • Run Flag Vehicle (1) - a mini-van will carry a Canadian flag on top • Relay Runners vehicle will have a sign on the back cautioning on coming traffic • Each vehicle would carry a flashing yellow warning light • Run would only be during day light hours 6am to 6pm • Run team would change every 3 hours to avoid fatigue of drivers/runners • Two way radio between vehicles for communication and to keep track of everyone • First aid kit in run vehicle as well as directions to local hospital and cell phone numbers In addition, our teams will be training in the Relay Format before the actual run, so that everyone can understand and be aware of possible situations to be able to prepare themselves mentally and physically.

  8. JOINT EFFORT This event can only be successful with everyone’s contribution. Here’s how you can get involved: • Sponsor the event • Food & drinks • Uniforms • Accommodations • Vehicles/Transportation • Make a donation • Donate cash or cheques, to volunteers or via mail • Credit Card or Paypal via Online Donations at www.ggscf.com • Volunteer • Runners, Drivers, Administration, Media Contacts • Get local communities involved • Fundraising • Moral support • Spread the word to Friends & Family across Canada – create a “buzz” • Organize local events to welcome the run into your community • Encourage & Support the youth • Show your support & pride for kids who are giving up their summers to run across Canada – not an easy task – to help other children live better lives, without wanting anything in return! • These are kids we should be proud to support!
