Brazil • While most of Latin America was at war with Spain for their independence, other European colonial powers were facing an end to their rule • Brazil had been under Portuguese control (they were the only Portuguese colony in the new world) • Brazil’s quest for independence differed from those of its neighbors • It occurred without violence or bloodshed • A member of the Portuguese royal family played a crucial role in the Independence of the country
