  2. Abrasion: An abrasion is a scratch or scrape.

  3. Aseptic Aseptic means free from disease or germs

  4. Bacteria • Bacteria are micro- organism that need nutrients from their environment to survive; for example, bacteria in people need nutrients from the human body to live. However, bacteria can also survive in non-living environments such as rocks and plastics.

  5. Cognitive Cognitive function refers to how people think, learn and judge.

  6. Communication book A communication book is used by workers and family members to write information for each other about what is happening with a client. This includes information about the clients’ health, what work has been done with them during the day and any changes that have taken place.

  7. . Global development delay Global development delay is when a child has delayed achievement in all developmental milestones

  8. Hazard A hazard is a situation or item that could cause harm.

  9. Incontinence: Incontinence is when a person cannot control their bowels or bladder.

  10. Infection Infection occurs as a result of coming into contact with germs that cause disease.

  11. Intact skin Intact skin is skin that is unbroken. This means there are no cuts, sores, scrapes or flaking skin.

  12. Manual handling Manual handling refers to the use of the human body to lift, lower, fill, empty or carry loads. The load can be animate ( a person or animal) or inanimate (an object)

  13. Micro- organisms Micro-organisms are very small organisms that are barely visible to the naked eye.

  14. Near miss A near miss is when an accident nearly happens.

  15. Organism An organism is a living thin- animal or plant.

  16. Personal protective equipment Personal protective equipment is used to prevent the worker’s skin, hair and clothing coming into contact with surfaces where there may be disease-causing bacteria and viruses.

  17. Policy A policy is a line of action adopted from other considerations such as government legislation, to guide and determine present and future decisions. Policies provide an overall plan with general goals.

  18. Posture A posture is the position of the body.

  19. Procedure A procedure prescribes actions that need to be executed a sequence of activities, tasks, steps and processes that when undertaken produce the described result or outcome.

  20. Repetitive tasks Repetitive tasks are tasks that you do many times, over and over again.

  21. Respirator A respirator is a piece of equipment that helps with breathing

  22. Risk A risk is the chance, high or low, that a hazard will cause harm, injury or ill health

  23. Sharps Sharps are objects such as hypodermic needles, syringes with needles, scalpels, razor blades and general broken glass.

  24. Transfer Transfers are when you move a person from one place to another.

  25. Viruses Viruses are smaller than bacteria. They can only be seen with a special microscope. Viruses need a living organism to live in and multiply.
