  1. The Respiratory System *Students know plants and animals have levels of organization for structure and function, including cells, tissues, organs, organ systems, and the whole organism

  2. Respiratory System Functions Respiratory system Respiration • Moves oxygen from the outside environment into the body and removes carbon dioxide and water from the body. • Oxygen and glucose undergo a complex series of chemical reactions inside cells

  3. The Path of Air • Path of air • Nose • cilia • Passes through the nose, pharynx, trachea, and bronchi. • Mucus-a thick sticky liquid that moistens the air and keeps the lining from drying out • Tiny hairlike extensions that move together in a sweeping motion

  4. Pharynx & Trachea • Pharynx (throat) • Trachea (windpipe) • Air enters the pharynx. It is shared with the respiratory and digestive system. • Air moves through the trachea or windpipe

  5. Bronchi and Lungs • Bronchi • Lungs • alveoli • Air moves from the trachea to the bronchi, the passages that direct air into the lungs. • Main organs of the respiratory system • Tiny sacs of lung tissue that moves gasses

  6. Gas Exchange • Gas exchange • After air enters an alveolus, oxygen passes through the wall of the alveolus through the capillary wall into the blood. Carbon dioxide and water pass from the blood into the alveoli.

  7. How You Breathe Process of Breathing diaphragm • When you breathe, the actions of your rib muscles and diaphragm cause your chest to expand or contract. As a result air flows in or out. • A large, dome –shaped muscle that plays an important part in breathing
