  1. Whenever the bishops in union with the Pope, in a council, teach or proclaim a matter of faith and/or morals, which must be definitively held, these teachings are infallible. • Ecumenical Councils 3. The Pope and a council can only declare something infallible because they are true, and the Church has always believed them. They introduce no new teaching, no new doctrine.

  2. Magisterium The Teaching office of the Church is exercised in two ways: Ordinary and Extraordinary • Extraordinary: solemn and formal exercise of the teaching office of the Pope and the Bishops. a) Pope Speaks Ex-Cathedra b) Ecumenical Council (21 Councils)

  3. Ordinary: regular exercise of the Church’s teaching office. It is always authoritative only because the doctrines itself is infallible. a) Encyclicals – letters by the Pope b) Statements from Synods– gathering of priests, bishops, and theologians for discussion and decision of matters relating to faith, morals, and discipline c) Individual instruction from Bishops to the faithful in their diocese.

  4. Government • Church has the authority from Christ to govern her members. 2. This authority is also exercised in matters of discipline. a) Fasting on Ash Wed. / Good Fri. b) Fasting one hour before communion c) Holy Days of Obligation

  5. Disciplines are not revealed by God * thus they can be changed • Doctrines cannot be changed even by those in authority. • Read: John 10:14-16, John 20:21. • We must obey the authority of the Church, who speaks for Christ. We must show the same obedience for the Church, that we would show for Christ himself.
