3. Economic Engine: Port Everglades • Port Everglades is an economic powerhouse for Broward County. The cruise and cargo industries provide jobs and inject money into our community. • Port Everglades generates nearly $26 billion worth of business activity and more than 201,000 jobs statewide, including almost 11,400 people who work for companies that provide direct services to Port Everglades.

8. Economic Engine: Port Everglades Port Everglades’ Foreign Trade Zone #25 has the capacity to designate any area in the county as a foreign trade zone with Port Everglades acting as the operator. Businesses have the opportunity to import parts and/or products into our FTZ and if these parts/products are directly re-exported to international markets, no US duties are imposed. Businesses can also manufacture, assemble or re-label products which includes some of the activities permitted in the zone.

Economic Engine: Fort Lauderdale-Hollywood International Airport • The Fort Lauderdale-Hollywood International Airport (FLL) ranks as the 21st busiest airport in the U.S. with 23,569,103 total passengers and ranked 14th in domestic Origin and Destination traffic. • FLL serves more U.S. cities than any other airport in South Florida with the lowest fares on more than 300 daily departures to over 100 destinations in the US, Latin America, Canada, Europe and the Caribbean.

Economic Engine: Fort Lauderdale-Hollywood International Airport • The ongoing Billion dollar project to expand the Fort Lauderdale International Airport has opened the door for several international airlines to start flying direct to Fort Lauderdale. • South Runway Expansion Project: o Estimated 11,000 jobs over the life of the project o $1.4 Billion economic impact to regional economy

11. Why South Florida - Your Global Hub Our strategic geographic location along with our foreign trade zone designation have allowed us to attract investment from Europe and Asia including businesses that would like to export to Latin America and the Caribbean. This reflects our triangle strategy.

Foreign Born Over 180 countries are represented in the world regions that characterize foreign born: • 552,669 foreign born individuals in Broward County • 78.5 % of foreign born are from Latin America • 8.50% of foreign born are from Europe • 8.14 % of foreign born are from Asia • 3.2 % of foreign born are from North America • 1.5 % of foreign born are from Africa • 0.102% of foreign born are from Oceania

Languages Spoken at Home Over 50 languages represented in the 4 language groups that characterize languages spoken at home: • 22.86 % of population 5 year and over speak Spanish language at home • 11.9 % of population 5 year and over speak Indo-European language at home • 2 % of population 5 year and over speak Asian and Pacific Islander language at home • 1 % of population 5 year and over speak Other language at home

Current and Future Job Opportunities The expansion of our port and airport to accommodate the increase of our international connectivity and grow international trade is creating a demand for an increased skilled-labor workforce in logistics, transportation and international trade. Moreover, trade and transportation are two of the top sectors that led the way in job creation over the last year.

Current and Future Job Opportunities In addition to our logistics and transportation workforce needs, the Broward County Office of Economic and Small Business Development (OESBD) seeks to encourage more small businesses in Broward County to grow their revenues by exporting: • According to the International Trade Administration, 2/3 of the purchasing power in the world lies outside of the United States • Less than 1% of America’s 30 million companies export • 98% US exporters are small to medium businesses

Current and Future Job Opportunities The State of Florida ranks fairly well in export activity: • Florida is home to more than 58,000 exporters, the second highest number in the United States. • In 2012, Florida companies exported more than $66.4 billion worth of goods – making it the 6th largest exporting state in the country. • over $36 billion worth of services were sold to companies in over 200 countries around the world.

What Can BCPS Do? • Instill interest and educate students from K-12 about the importance of our strategic geographic location within the United States • Celebrate and promote the diversity in Broward County • Continue to broaden the student’s perspective and horizon on the different cultures around the world and recognize South Florida as the gateway to the Caribbean, Latin America and the rest of the world through the Atlantic

In addition to gaining knowledge of the principles of international business and trade through education and other hard skills needed to work in this industry, it is important not to ignore the soft skills needed for this industry such as: • language skills • collaborative globally-open mindset • natural curiosity • interest and respect of other countries • Awareness of foreign norms and cultures • creative thinking
