  1. How Do I Develop Turf Grasses For Forage.

  2. Location/Original Characteristics • The forage that I want to develop is located in the rural areas of Dell Rapids, SD. • The forage is about 28 acres (1,999,680 square feet) in size. • The current grass type consists of sweet clover and alsike clover. • The grass has no available irrigation system other than natural resources. • The turf has very little traffic, except during bailing seasons.

  3. Soil Characteristics • The soil characteristics are as follows • Medium soil texture • 6.8 pH • 8 - 10 inch deep soil depth • The area is mostly flat • There are no sloping areas.

  4. Seeds to plant • I would use Sweet Clover and Alsike Clover brand seed because this is the type of forage that we prefer to feed our animals. • They both range about $1.30 per pound of seeds. • They are available with most large seed companies.

  5. Ground preparation • I would have to till to prepare the ground. I would also need to pre-fertilize to kill all the left over weeds from the previous year.

  6. Maintenance • I would have to • Mow and bail the forage when the clover is tall and developed enough. • I would fertilize before I plant the clover and after the fall season ends. I would not have to do much more than this to keep a healthy forage.

  7. Fertilizer • I would use 24D fertilizer because that is the common fertilizer and herbicide that we have always used.

  8. Conclusion • We have concluded that taking care of this forage would not take that much effort or time. It would be a great investment as far as our profits will go. It would also be a great way to supply feed for our animals too.
