  16. The ‘Double Whammy’ • In blubber, PCBs are not very harmful. • Low salmon runs force orcas to metabolize more blubber to survive. • The blubber releases PCBs into the blood, destroying the immune system. • Therefore, starvation increases the lethality of the pollutant.
