  1. Action Research Project Contract Informal Presentation

  2. Starter: My Goals as an Educator • Masters • Accreditation • Educational Technologist • AFL • Critical Thinking Facilitator

  3. Task • My task is to improve the critical thinking abilities of my Math A30 students.

  4. Reasoning • based on • past observations of other students in Math A30 • conversations with the math teacher that taught this year’s Math A30 students last year.

  5. Research Needed • I need to • Examine the standardized testing conducted on this year’s students, • Assessment for Learning • CAT results • Consult with the ELA teacher to determine the effect that reading comprehension plays in the students’ ability to solve problems. • give the students higher-level questions at the beginning of the year to determine their “baseline level”.

  6. Evidence Needed • I plan to • give regular assessments using the higher-level questions from the available provincial exams, which I will mix and match as needed. • plot the growth and change of the students over time using the format described in the “From L to J” model ( http://www.ltojconsulting.com/ltoj.html ). I hope to see at least a 10% improvement by the end of the semester. • continue this project into Math B30, as I will have most, if not all of the same students.

  7. Data Collection Techniques • I plan to • use higher-level questions from the available provincial exams, which I will mix and match as needed. • plot the growth and change of the students over time. I will choose questions that cover topics that the students have studied already.

  8. Plan for Evidence • I plan to • present this data to my administration as part of a presentation of how to add critical thinking to math classes at my school, and, after two more years of data collection, to the division at convention.

  9. Proposed Timeline • I plan to start right away in August 2009. • The first year of the plan will encompass the 2009-2010 school year, and, based on the data collected, will be continued until the 2011-2012 school year

  10. Future Plans • I plan to continue the program, altering it, as needed based on research.
