  2. RUGBY UNION CORE VALUES TEAMWORK • Teamwork is essential to our sport. We welcome all new team members and include all because working as a team enriches our lives. We play selflessly: working for the team, not for ourselves alone, both on and off the field. We take pride in our team, rely on one another and understand that each player has a part to play. We speak out if our team or sport is threatened by inappropriate words or actions. RESPECT • Mutual respect forms the basis of our sport. We hold in high esteem our sport, its values and traditions and earn the respect of others in the way we behave. We respect our match officials and accept our decisions. We respect opposition players and supporters. We value our coaches and those who run our clubs and treat clubhouses with consideration. ENJOYMENT • Enjoyment is the reason we play and support rugby union. We encourage players to enjoy training and playing. We use our sport to adopt a healthy lifestyle and build life skills. We safeguard our young players and help them have fun. We enjoy being part of a team and part of the rugby family. DISCIPLINE • Strong discipline underpins our sport. We ensure that our sport is one of controlled physical endeavour and that we are honest and fair. We obey the laws of the game which ensure an inclusive and exciting global game. We support our disciplinary system, which protects our sport and upholds its values. We observe the sport's laws and regulations and report serious breaches. SPORTSMANSHIP • Sportsmanship is the foundation upon which rugby union is built. We uphold the rugby tradition of camaraderie with teammates and opposition. We observe fair play both on and off the pitch and are generous in victory and dignified in defeat. We play to win but not at all costs and recognise both endeavour and achievement. We ensure that the wellbeing and development of individual players is central to all rugby activity.

  9. Our Players Vision“Strength and Honour” “Strength and honour”, was a term used by Roman Soldiers and given the fact that South Shields was the home of a strategic Roman fort, supplying soldiers to Hadrians Wall, it is fitting that this motto has become our adopted vision, of how we expect players to behave before, during and after battle. Who wouldn’t be strong and honourable? Who wouldn’t want to identify himself with virtues that created a vast empire and at the same time remained simple and retained much of the qualities stemming from a small warrior tribe, wandering out of Troy, and finding a new home amongst barbarian tribes? Yes, “strength is undoubtedly something that all men crave… some just want it more”, as Achilles said, the ultimate warrior. Over the centuries, our town has been built on these foundations and subsequently, we have a proud Industrial and Economic History. North Easterners are renowned the world over, for their proud spirit and “never go down attitude”. Our forefathers in the Coal Mining and Ship Building Industries, echoed the same spirit as our early ancestors, as they set out every day facing a dangerous days work. So, strength is what we all want and testosterone to foam out of our ears and adrenalin to pump blood into our head, and we all want the thrill of a battle, the blood-curdling swears, the hot and satiating exultation of a victory, the fierce competition and the enemy defeated. For it satisfies both honour and our instinct as men, to see it stand again to be defeated again… for strength needs one thing for existence: weakness. These opposites define each other. No matter how strong you are, how the best and bravest you have become – it worth absolutely nothing without somebody weaker. Whom do you beat if you have no adversary, or you let it grow stronger, strong enough to withstand you? Your strength becomes nothing; it is empty air only if you cannot defeat someone. Real honour would welcome a real adversary, whose strength was equal to your own. That would be a challenge, not throwing your weight about menacing smaller teams. Honour is a good name. It is the regard in which others hold you. It is what will sometime decide somebody’s stance for or against you. Strength often says that it cares little for reputation. Well, it is a lie. Strength is the most vain human virtue. Strength must be seen, admired, appreciated and above all praised. So strength does really care about its reputation. Honour on the other hand needs no explanation; it is an act that speaks for itself. For our team, it means personal integrity and allegiance to our Team Members and the moral code that binds the group together:- - Courage- Unity- Determination - Adaptability- Unselfishness- Respect- Cheerfulness- Professional Standards- Fortitude Strength and Honour (Virtus et Honour).May you find both
