  4. Continental Drift • Alfred Wegner helped develop the Continental Drift Theory • All the separate continents were once joined together, called Pangaea. • The earth is divided into tectonic plates. • Which continents look like they were once joined?

  5. How does the liquid mantle cause the solid plates to move? Zones of the Earth Click here to find out!

  6. POP QUIZ!!!!!! WHICH PART OF THE EGG REPRESENTS EACH PART OF THE EARTH???

  7. When Plates Move… The face of the Earth changes…

  8. With the build-up of enough pressure the Earth will break and the plates will move suddenly causing an earthquake. This “break” place is called the EPICENTRE. • Cool fact: An earthquake shakes the planet about every 3 minutes or 180 000 times each year. • Q: Look at a map and locate a region that you expect there to be a high frequency of earthquakes in North America. Why there?

  9. Think…Talk…Record… • Q 1: Do you expect there to be plains very close to the boundaries of different plates? Explain your thinking. • Q 2: If you were looking to move to a part of the world that was relatively unaffected by natural disasters, where should you go? Use the knowledge gained in this lesson to explain why.
