  5. 02/28/12 • What is a “beat”? • Beats are small sections of a monologue • How do I know if I am beginning a new beat? • There will be a change in emotion, movement, or action during a line

  6. 02/28/12 • Why is this important as a director? • Beats are similar to “French Scenes” • What is a “French Scene”? • A “French Scene” is a small section of a scene

  7. 02/28/12 • Why is this important to know as an actor? • Dividing a monologue or line into beats can help you find a change in emotion or action for your piece • It helps you create “emotional levels” in a piece of theatre being performed

  8. 02/28/12 • What is “Verbing” a monologue? • Putting verbs with each “Beat” of a monologue • What kind of verbs are used to “Beat” a monologue? • Always, ALWAYS use action verbs • Why should I use action verbs? • This brings tension to the scene
