  1. Yesterday’s Bell Ringer: Yesterday’s bell ringer asked for: 3 things you’ve learned while studying Stereotyping. 3 things about Stereotyping of which you’re still curious. 3 things you will do differently after studying Stereotyping. If you can’t offer answers, there is something wrong.

  2. Debate Topics Mr. Short / Critical Thinking / April 28th, 2011

  3. Today’s Task: Today you will find out your debate topic. The majority of the period will be in the Computer Lab (next to the library) to begin research for our debates.

  4. Today’s Task: • After recording your debate topic, we will conduct research in the library. • Use this time to explore your topic. • Think of a thesis statement to show why your position is either “affirmative” or “negative.” • Begin to build your case by looking at both sides of the argument.

  5. Homework: Each person must bring two researched sources to class tomorrow to prove they are investigating their topic. Be sure these resources are discussing the topic from different points of view, or using different factors to support the argument. Your findings will be handed in at the beginning of the period tomorrow. (Please be sure your name is included.)

  6. Topic Assignment: • After hours of calculation, the debate teams have been created based on your preferences. • Please record the topic you will be debating.

  7. Standardized Testing: • Standardized testing is fair and should continue to be used to evaluate students.

  8. Lowered Drinking Age: • U.S. citizens should be able to consume alcohol at the age of 18.

  9. Death Penalty: • The death penalty should continue to be administered to criminals.

  10. Abortion: • A woman should be allowed to have an abortion.

  11. Media: • The media should be censored to protect youth.

  12. Immigration: • People living in America illegally should be allowed to stay in the country.

  13. Debate is Critical Thinking: • Write one sentence supporting your position on the topic you will be debating. • Write one sentence discussing why the opposite of your position is wrong.

  14. Switch Affirmative & Negative: Yesterday, you voted for what you felt most strongly about. Now, you will now be debating AGAINST what you believe in, by supporting the opposite of your belief. Critical Thinking? Yes!
