  1. The baptism of Jesus – Mt.3:11-17 1. John’s baptism – Mt.3:1-11 John prepared the way for Jesus – v.3 :- a. Preaching repentance – v.1,2,7,8 b. Those who repented were baptized –v.5,6,11 John’s baptism was about:- a. Dealing with the past – sins forgiven b. Looking to the future – ready for the Messiah

  2. 2. Why was Jesus baptized? John had been pointing to Jesus:- a. He was a King. John was a servant –v.11 b. He would bring a greater baptism 1. A baptism of life – v.11 2. A baptism of judgment – v.10-12 THIS WAS SOMEONE VERY SPECIAL

Why did Jesus want to be baptized? v.15 – “to fulfill all righteousness” – God’s plan of salvation would be carried out by Jesus Step 1 – Becoming one of us – Bethlehem Step 2 – Standing with sinners – Baptism Step 3 – Taking the place of sinners – Cross He was “numbered with transgressors” – Is.53:12; Lk.22:37

  4. 3. What happened at Jesus’ baptism? a. Holy Spirit comes on Jesus – v.16 Jesus is equipped for his work b. The Father announces from heaven –v.17 1. The identity of Jesus – cf. Ps.2:7 2. The mission of Jesus – cf. Is.42:1 It was important that Jesus would know:- 1. A strong relationship with his father 2. His mission – Is.42:1; 53:5,6 3. Equipping for the mission – Lk.4:14-19

  5. 4. What about you & me? a. The necessity of receiving Jesus Will you receive forgiveness & new life? The danger of rejecting Jesus – judgment God’s tearful judgment – Is.15:5; 16:9,11; Lk.19:41-44 b. Identifying with Jesus – in baptism declaring our union with Jesus

  6. Baptism We declare our being united to Jesus:- a. In his death – our sins were dealt with b. In his resurrection – raised to new life c. In his mission – offering salvation to sinners Will you be baptized? What is stopping you?
