  2. John’s Purpose In Writing This LetterMy purpose in writing is simply this: that you who believe in God's Son will know beyond the shadow of a doubt that you have eternal life, the reality and not the illusion. (5:13 MSG) Taking 1 John Verse by Verse

  3. 1 John 5:13–18 HCSB I have written these things to you who believe in the name of the Son of God, so that you may know that you have eternal life. 14 Now this is the confidence we have before Him: whenever we ask anything according to His will, He hears us. 15 And if we know that He hears whatever we ask, we know that we have what we have asked Him for. 16 If anyone sees his brother committing a sin that does not bring death, he should ask, and God will give life to him—to those who commit sin that doesn’t bring death. There is sin that brings death. I am not saying he should pray about that. 17 All unrighteousness is sin, and there is sin that does not bring death. 18 We know that everyone who has been born of God does not sin, but the One who is born of God keeps him, and the evil one does not touch him.

  4. 1 John 5:13–18 NLT I have written this to you who believe in the name of the Son of God, so that you may know you have eternal life. 14 And we are confident that he hears us whenever we ask for anything that pleases him. 15 And since we know he hears us when we make our requests, we also know that he will give us what we ask for. 16 If you see a Christian brother or sister sinning in a way that does not lead to death, you should pray, and God will give that person life. But there is a sin that leads to death, and I am not saying you should pray for those who commit it. 17 All wicked actions are sin, but not every sin leads to death. 18 We know that God’s children do not make a practice of sinning, for God’s Son holds them securely, and the evil one cannot touch them.

  5. 1 John 5:13-15 It’s good to talk* • I have written this to you who believe in the name of the Son of God, so that you may know you have eternal life. 14 And we are confident that he hears us whenever we ask for anything that pleases him. 15 And since we know he hears us when we make our requests, we also know that he will give us what we ask for.NLT • John encourages his readers to approach God confidently. • We are children with ready access to our Father. • We can, of course, ‘ask anything’, but John reminds us that God answers prayers which agree with his will. Christian prayer centers on what God wants: • Your kingdom come, • your will be done (Matthew 6:10). • [*Credit: Knowles, A. (2001)]

  6. 1 John 5:16–17 Dealing with sin* If you see a Christian brother or sister* sinning in a way that does not lead to death, you should pray, and God will give that person life. But there is a sin that leads to death, and I am not saying you should pray for those who commit it. 17 All wicked actions are sin, but not every sin leads to death. NLT What about praying for forgiveness for someone who has sinned? Are we asking God to overrule his own holy standard in this case, because we know the person concerned? John encourages his readers to pray for their brothers and sisters who have sinned — that they may be forgiven and enjoy life with God. This is the main way in which every Christian is a priest, bringing others to God in prayer. Does not result in death. There is a sin not unto death, and one unto death. The sin described in Heb 6:4-6 is evidently unto death; that described in Gal 6:1 is one not unto death. In the latter case the one who has sinned can be restored, and we may pray for them with the assurance that they will be. This implies both loving labor and prayer for the one in need. [continued…]

  7. Hebrews 6:4-9 For it is impossible, in the case of those who have once been enlightened, who have tasted the heavenly gift, and have shared in the Holy Spirit, (5) and have tasted the goodness of the word of God and the powers of the age to come, (6) and then have fallen away, to restore them again to repentance, since they are crucifying once again the Son of God to their own harm and holding him up to contempt. (7) For land that has drunk the rain that often falls on it, and produces a crop useful to those for whose sake it is cultivated, receives a blessing from God. (8) But if it bears thorns and thistles, it is worthless and near to being cursed, and its end is to be burned. (9) Though we speak in this way, yet in your case, beloved, we feel sure of better things--things that belong to salvation. Galatians 6:1-2 Brothers, if anyone is caught in any transgression, you who are spiritual should restore him in a spirit of gentleness. Keep watch on yourself, lest you too be tempted. (2) Bear one another's burdens, and so fulfill the law of Christ.

  8. 1 John 5:18 John sums up his teaching about sin 18 We know that God’s children do not make a practice of sinning, for God’s Son holds them securely, and the evil one cannot touch them. NLT A true child of God won’t continue sinning. It’s not in their new nature. Sin is possible for the Christian — but it isn’t worthy of God’s children to displease their Father by wrongdoings. Because we belong to Christ and seek to obey God, our wrongdoings are more likely to be short lapses into old habits. We deeply regret whenever we fall short of pleasing our Master. In the grace of God, when such sins occur, we can repent and be forgiven. 1John 3:9 No one born of God makes a practice of sinning, for God's seed abides in him, and he cannot keep on sinning because he has been born of God. 1John 1:8-10 If we say we have no sin, we deceive ourselves, and the truth is not in us. (9) If we confess our sins, he is faithful and just to forgive us our sins and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness. (10) If we say we have not sinned, we make him a liar, and his word is not in us.

  9. The New Heart – The Glorious Work of the Spirit in the New Covenant – The Flesh and its sinful desires are no longer your master. Jeremiah 31:33-34 But this is the covenant that I will make with the house of Israel after those days, declares the LORD: I will put my law within them, and I will write it on their hearts. And I will be their God, and they shall be my people. (34) And no longer shall each one teach his neighbor and each his brother, saying, 'Know the LORD,' for they shall all know me, from the least of them to the greatest, declares the LORD. For I will forgive their iniquity, and I will remember their sin no more." Ezekiel 36:25-27 I will sprinkle clean water on you, and you shall be clean from all your uncleannesses, and from all your idols I will cleanse you. (26) And I will give you a new heart, and a new spirit I will put within you. And I will remove the heart of stone from your flesh and give you a heart of flesh. (27) And I will put my Spirit within you, and cause you to walk in my statutes and be careful to obey my rules.
