General Features for the New Paradigm • Keep working on a standard until it is learned • Move on as soon as it is learned • Customized, personalized learning • Intrinsic motivation, self-direction • Performance-based assessment (PBA) • Performance-based learning (PBL) • Collaborative learning (teams) • Teacher as coach or facilitator • 21st Century Skills (John Box) • Advanced technologies as tools

  36. 1. What might the new paradigm be like? Four Major Functions for Technology • Record keeping for student learning • Planning for student learning • Instruction for student learning • Assessment for student learning Does this make sense? Comments?

  37. 3. What can be done to help schools change their paradigm? Paradigm change is very different from piecemeal reform. • The incompatibility problem • The mindset problem • The invention problem • The ownership problem • The leadership problem • The expertise problem • The resource problem

  38. 3. What can be done to help schools change their paradigm? The AECT FutureMinds Initiative Strategy The school district must be the unit of change. Districts need two things: Expertise & Money State Education Agencies should meet these needs. SEAs have to build their capacity. The FutureMinds Initiative helps SEAs do this. (2) The School System Transformation Protocol is used.
