Project name: FOOD SECURITY IMPROVEMENT INTERVENTION IN GORO WOREDA THROUGH ENHANCED SMALLHOLDERS’ SPICES PRODUCTION & MARKETING. Oromia, Bale, Goro (60 km from Robe) There are four 4 kebeles: WelteiGere, WelteiGobu, WelteiImana and WelteiChefa directly address 448 HHs (220 females) or 4.170 people Overall Objective: to attain sustainable food security of the targeted small holder farmers through the creation of an enabling market environment. OUTCOME RESULTS Average income of 448 project participant (PP) small holder farmers (50% females) increased from 4750 birr/annum to 5937/annum by the end of the project period Introduction

Cooperatives were organized and the legalization is on process Membership was based on the principle of voluntarism 3. Leadership was also based on capacity and volunteerism (they will be paid workers) 4. They facilitate communities to do the same Organisation

Knowledge on quality spice product improved –training conducted, on sight technical support have been provided The cooperatives have proper knowledge on product markets The trashing machine will improve product quality Potential markets have already identified Marketing

Memebership cn The high product as a result of the technical support and improved seed provision. Quality black cumin as a result of the trashing machine and post harvest handling The main cost of the cooperatives are man power, communication costs and other office running costs Incomes of the targeted households on the increase Economics

The cooperative chairperson will be the accountant and all the bookkeeping activity will be carried out by himself/herself the amount of profit dividend will gradually increase based on the financial capability of the coops Costs will be minimized by using the labor of the members Financial efficiency

The compost utilization avoided chemical fertilizer DAs are continuously teaching on how to plough the land with the aim to avoid soil erosion Environmental issues

Gender issues are mainstreamed. More than 25% of the cooperatives are female In all activities the specific need of women were considered Gender

As the income of the target groups are in the rise, it is being contributed to the attainment of food security at household level. Upon the provision of the improved seed and the trashing machine the income level of the target household will significantly increased Food Security
