  1. Mu2e Facility Needs R. Ray Mu2e Project Manager R. Ray

  2. Introduction • Significant Mu2e work will be done at Fermilab in many areas. The areas requiring space and/or resources are: • Solenoids • Accelerator • Tracker • Trigger and DAQ • Cosmic ray veto • Possibly the calorimeter • Road Work • We also require office space for the Project and for Collaborators. R. Ray

  3. Solenoids • We plan to build the PS and DS in industry. By the time they are delivered we will have an experimental hall to put them in with the requisite infrastructure to cold test and commission them R. Ray

  4. Transport Solenoid • We intend to design and build the TS at Fermilab • Build in 5 sections • Procure many parts from industry • Coils • Cryostats • Etc. • Test pieces and assemble in Industrial Center Building (~ 300’ x 60’) • Room temperature magnetic tests • Need ~ ¾ of Industrial Center Building for several years • 2014 – 2016 • To perform cold tests of the TS we would need full use of ~ half of the IB1 test facility for about 3 - 6 months in 2016. • TS has very leaky field so we would have to rope off sections of the building. R. Ray

  5. Accelerator • Add an extraction kicker to the Recycler • Similar kicker for NOvA is being built in IB2. We would need similar space. – FY14-16 • Double the size of MI-52 to hold power supplies • Similar to MiNU GPP project for NOvA • Add RF systems to the Accumulator and Debuncher Rings • Significant work done in industry Mu2e Main Injector and Recycler • Final welding done in house. For NOvA welding done in the AD Mechanical Support Dept area in the SE Annex high bay (~70’ x 20’) – FY15-16. • Testing needs to be done in a RF cave because of x-rays.   • NOvA using the TeV/MI RF test stand in F0 – FY16. R. Ray

  6. Heat shield • Heat shield is a 70 ton structure made from tungsten and copper. • Made in pieces dictated by the size of tungsten plates that can be manufactured. • Because solenoids are the critical path we will want to assemble or partially assemble the heat shield before the PS arrives. • Could assemble in Mu2e hall, but might interfere with other work to prepare hall for solenoids and tie up 1 of 2 cranes. • Would prefer to do this work at PAB or equivalent – FY16. Heat Shield R. Ray

  7. Tracker • Tracker R&D currently ongoing at CDF and Lab 3. • Electronics development testing at CDF • Mechanical assembly/testing at Lab 3 • Clean room, CMM and mechanical space outside of clean room. • Current model for tracker construction (subject to change) • Straws and straw panels made at universities. • Panels assembled into final detector, electronics attached at Fermilab • Would need the entire Lab 3 clean room or equivalent for this – FY14 – 17. • Really need humidity control more than clean room, so some other space could work. R. Ray

  8. DAQ • We will need some space for a test stand for the DAQ. • NOvA has a small room (~10’ x 10’) on the 3d floor of Feynman for this purpose. We would need something similar FY15 – 17. • Continued GRID support. • Currently using 300 slots with a high duty factor. Need more! R. Ray

  9. Cosmic Ray Veto • Current plan is to build the CRV out of scintillator extruded at Anna Pla’s Lab 5 facility - FY14 - 15. • Would likely ship scintillator to Virginia for fiber insertion and connection of optical sensor (SiPM?) and QA/QC. • Ship to Fermilab after Detector Hall is ready. • No defined plan yet for retesting after shipping. • If necessary, would likely do it in the Mu2e Hall. R. Ray

  10. Calorimeter • Plans for the calorimeter are still very uncertain. • We hope that it can be provided in-kind by Italy, but this is far from worked out. • If INFN does not provide the calorimeter, I would hope to do most of the work at a University, but no plan exists. • Possible that this work could default to Fermilab. • This would require clean room space. • The Lab 3 clean room that we need for the tracker would be ideal, so something on that scale would be required. R. Ray

  11. Road Work • Length of beamline has grown to accommodate beam optics required for extinction system. • Still in flux. • May require diversion of Kautz road to the North of the Mu2e Detector Hall. • Also requires closing part of Giese Road, or having road go up over berm. R. Ray

  12. Office space • Currently have • 1 office for Project Manager on WH9E • 1 office for 2 guest scientists • 1 office for summer visitors – Convert to space for C. Group (FNAL/UVa) and post docs. • ½ of an office for a term Engineering Physicist who is leaving in December. • A couple of accelerator students stashed somewhere on the 13th floor. • We also have some CDF collaborators on Mu2e who continue to use their space at CDF. R. Ray

  13. Office Space • We will eventually need most of WH9E or an equivalent space. • TD and AD scientists stay where they are • We need the following in the next year: • 1 office for Project Manager (existing) • 1 office for Deputy Project Manager • 1 office for 2 project controls people • 1 office for Project Assistant • Space for Project Admin (existing) • 2 offices for scientists (existing) • 1 office for long-term (9 – 12 months) guests (existing) • We need the following 1 – 2 years from now • 1 office for 2 more project controls people • 1 office for Budget Officer • 1 office for Project Mechanical Engineer • We need the following 2+ years from now • 4 - 6 offices for scientists who migrate from Energy Frontier • 1 – 2 offices for FNAL Mu2e post docs. We also need space every summer for an influx of students R. Ray

  14. Conclusion • I have probably underestimated our needs, so take everything I just told you and double it… R. Ray
