  3. Purpose of this Session • Stimulate you to think about your role as facilitators • Reflect on what the future holds for you • Facilitation • What is it? • Does it have a future? • What’s shaping the future?

  4. Looking to the Future • In 5 years time will there be a need for PRIMIS? • In 5 years time will you be employed in your current role? • Will problems of data quality, information be sorted out, making you redundant?

  16. PRIMIS Philosophy and Mission Improve patient care through the effective use of clinical computer systems • Provide training and assistance to information facilitators • Facilitators "cascade" their knowledge and skills to GPs and practice staff in their local health communities

  21. History of Facilitation Role of facilitators in primary health care established nearly 20 years ago (1982) First facilitator employed to help GPs implement guidelines on the prevention of arterial disease (Astrop 1988) Rapid growth in number of facilitators 61 in 1988 456 in 1994

  22. Skills and Knowledge • Understanding of how groups work and how to manage them • Awareness of relevant statistics • Research knowledge of health needs • Understanding of multidisciplinary audit • (Hooker 1994)

  23. Benefits Facilitators working in primary care have been identified as the most suitable group to provide relevant information and training for practice staff (Armstrong 1994b, Bower et al 1997)

  24. Where does future come in? PRIMIS has a good track record …..5 year partnership with NHS IA Suggests facilitators doing a good job But, will information facilitators be needed in 5 years time??

The NHS Needs You! “With massive NHS investment in information technology, need find ways to improve quality of electronic health records in general practice and derive maximum benefit from the data they contain” Professor Azeem Majeed, Professor of primary care at Imperial College London (2004)

Reasons Need Facilitators • Impact of Connecting for Health – long term • Staff leave, new staff take up post • Practices need updating, refreshing, reminding • New initiatives will create need demands for information • Once achieve basic mastery, control of local data, staff will perceive new opportunities

  27. Present Situation • Quality and completeness of electronic health record varies enormously • Variability in completeness and accuracy of coding • Practices are at very different starting points

  28. Warning Amount of effort needed to improve data quality should not be under-estimated Requires ongoing support and monitoring

  29. Visions of the Future So how might the future be different? Does future have to do with gadgets (IT and all that??) Does future have to do with new insights, new theories? Is there anything new to learn about learning or is it just a matter of putting what we already know into practice?

  30. Facilitators of the Future • New Career Pathways – e.g. • Research • Consultancy • Migrate to other sectors • Use technology to support change

  31. FUTURE - some predictions • All facilitators will be accredited • Some will move from PRIMIS to other areas • within health, outside health – e.g. education, social services, community development, corporate world • Possess generic, transferable skills

  32. Consultancy with software companies, Local Service Providers • Facilitators might use their knowledge and skills to work directly with software companies to help design better systems which reflect needs of users • Think about ergonomics, human-computer interface problems

  33. Scope for Change, Innovation? Facilitation: a people intensive business Cannot easily be turned into distance learning, elearning, ementoring But perhaps in future facilitators will find novel ways to use technology to support their role

  34. Using Technology to Support Facilitation Create and sustain virtual communities Provide help after practice has achieved some basic goals and needs time to embed, reflect, grow

  35. On-line Facilitation Canadians have been experimenting with online facilitation

  36. Ways of Supporting Practices from a Distance Use emerging tools for facilitating communication, cooperative working within practices • Weblogs (Blogs) • Online support groups • Text messaging • Videoconferencing • Local intranets • N3

  37. CPD for Facilitators Same tools can be used to support facilitators Deliver Continuing Professional Development, accredited learning opportunities

Future of Facilitation • IMAGINE - a world where ….. • The value of human capital is recognised (not just machines, technology, premises) • Society appreciates the need to invest in people • Skills of facilitators, trainers, developers, educators are recognised • Understood that technology does not deliver benefit - people do

  39. Imagine a World where … • Ring fenced budgets for education, training, development are established • Invest in research into ETD - to know what does and does not work • Realise importance of engaging workforce - preparing them for change • Listen to what people at the bottom have to say
