  2. PURPOSE OF PRESENTATION • To inform participants of a proposed ESC Mentoring Initiative • To receive feedback from participants on the proposal • To seek support for an intended future program

  3. WHY MENTORING IN THE ESC*? • To grow holistic witnesses at home, work, study, church, etc. • To foster spiritual formation • To develop understanding of church and ministry service ======================== *Relationship to Discipleship Program

  4. MISSION AND VISION • Vision statement: Growing ESC brothers and sisters into holistic witnesses of Jesus Christ • Mission statement: Providing support to ESC brothers and sisters in issues relating to work, study, family, and church, as part of life learning

  5. WHO IS INITIATIVE FOR? • ESC members and adherents • age 18 and above

  6. GOVERNANCE

  7. MENTORS AND MENTEES • Mentoring Initiative Task Group will consult with ESC Core Team or BLM for prospective mentors and mentees • Application open to all ESC members according to established criteria • Task Group - recommended mentors and mentees to be approved by the Core Team

  8. CRITERIA FOR MENTORS • Active Member of NYCBC who attends ESC • Christian for at least five years • Servant attitude • Ability to relate and communicate

  9. CRITERIA FOR MENTEES • Christian • Regular attendees of ESC including adherents • priority given to members of NYCBC • Willingness to learn • Priority given to those who have gone through ESC discipleship training or equivalent

  10. MENTOR/MENTEE MATCHING • Task Group in consultation with ESC Core Team or BLM, using criteria below: • Same gender • Consideration given to age, compatibility, common background/interest, etc.

  11. MENTOR/MENTEE MEETING • WHAT • Mentor facilitates dialogue to guide, contributes to, and benefits mentee’s special needs • Church developments and other topics as needed • Personal sharing and praying together • HOW • Mentor builds relationship with mentee • 1:1 in person meetings (1½ hours each time), to be supplemented by phone calls and emails • Group seminars on topics of common interest to mentees, as identified by mentors

  12. MENTOR/MENTEE MEETING (cont’d) • WHEN • No less than once per month for 1:1 meetings • Group seminars on an as needed basis • WHERE • At church, at home, in coffee shop, etc

  13. EXPECTATIONS OF MENTORS/MENTEES • Mentors • One year commitment • Committed to participating in 1:1 mentor/mentee meetings, group sessions and mentor support sessions (including training) • Required documentation on progress, referral, and outcome, respecting boundary and confidentiality • Mentees • One year commitment • Committed to participating in 1:1 mentor/mentee meetings and group sessions

  14. DURATION OF INITIATIVE • Initial (Pilot) Phase • January to December 2012 • Subsequent Phases (subject to approval) • Ongoing 12-month cycles
