  1. How do you find the percent of change and what percent the final amount is of the original amount? For example: Before running a mile Joe’s heart rate was 60 beats per minute. After running the mile Joe’s heart rate was 90 beats per minute. What was the percent of change in Joe’s heart rate? What percent of the original rate is the final rate?

  2. In this lesson you will learn how to find the percent change and what percent the final amount is of the original amountby using diagrams, proportions, and equations.

  3. You can use three approaches: • Diagrams • Proportions • Equations 100% 25% 0.25 x 36 = 100x

  4. Solving a Proportion 100x = 25 x 36 100x = 900

  5. Solving an Equation 100x = 900 x = 9

  6. Percents CAN be greater than 100! 125% 100% 175%

  7. Before running a mile Joe’s heart rate was 60 beats per minute. After running the mile Joe’s heart rate was 90 beats per minute. What was the percent of change in Joe’s heart rate? What percent of the original rate is his final rate? Original = 60 bpm Change = 30 bpm Final = 90 bpm

  8. Option 1: Use diagrams Final Rate Original Rate Rate Change 50% 50% 100% 100% 60 bpm= 100% 30 bpm= 50% of 60 50% increase 90 bpm= 150% of 60 150% increase

  9. Option 2: Use proportions

  10. 60x = 30 x 100 60x = 3,000 x = 50 50% of original 50% increase

  11. 60x = 90 x 100 60x = 9,000 x = 150 150% of original 150% increase

  12. Option 3: Use equations 60 + 60x = 90 60x = 30 x = 0.5 = 50% 60x = 90 x = 1.5 = 150% 50% of original 50% increase 150% of original 150% increase

  13. In this lesson you have learned how to find the percent change and the percent that the final amount is of the original amount by using diagrams, proportions, and equations.

  14. At 9 AM the price of 1 share of stock in Technology Corporation was $24. At 5 PM the price was $18. Use diagrams, proportions, and equations to determine the percent of change and what percent the final amount is of the original amount?

  15. Track the cost of 1 share of stock in a company of your choice at 5 increments over time (minutes, hours, or days). Create a chart organize your data. What was the percent change at each increment? What percent of the original amount was the final amount?

  16. Take your resting heart rate in beats per minute. Do 10 jumping jacks and retake your heart rate. Sit for 5 minutes to get your heart rate to return to its resting rate. Do 20 jumping jacks and retake your heart rate. Record your data in a table. Find the % change and what percent the final amount was of the original amount for both the 10 and 20 jumping jack routines.

  17. Jen blinking rate increased from 30 blinks per minute to 75 blinks per minute. Use diagrams, proportions, and equations to determine the percent of change in her blinking rateand what percentthe final amount was of the original amount. A cellphone that was $75 is now $50. Use diagrams, proportions, and equations to find the percent of change and what percent the final amount is of the original amount.
