  3. George Reynolds • He was accused of polygamy meaning that he married another women while having a wife. • Was indicted at the district court for the 3rd Judicial District of the Territory of Utah. • Violated 1st Amendment right to freedom of religion

  4. George Reynolds Life • Born January 1,1842 And passed in August 9,1909 • Was General Authority Of Jesus Christ Latter-day Saints • Was first married to wife Amelia Jane Schofield and then got married Mary Gold, his third and final wife

  5. The United states • Felt that the 1st amendment did not protect polygamy • Decision was based on historic American Cultural values • Morrill Act outlawed polygamy throughout the U.S in general.

The History of Polygamy • Religion was called the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints, but most people called them the Mormons. • Most controversial belief was that a man could have more than one wife. • Tried instructing jury that if the jury found he committed polygamy with the only intent of following his religion.

Case Summary • George Reynolds was indicted because he committed polygamy. • Found guilty by the lower court, he appealed to the Supreme court of the Utah territories, which upheld the conviction. • Took case to supreme court and lost which Reynolds sentence was two years of imprisonment and a $500 fine.

  8. Why was this case important • Was important because this man committed polygamy • Felt that he could marry more than one wife and not get caught • Was practicing his religion by marrying another women while his wife was alive

  9. Where Polygamy originated from • It was never practiced in public by the church of Jesus Christ of Latter day saints • Began by Joseph Smith • Was first reluctant about teaching this and didn’t share it with people for many years.

Fun Facts • Felt that the case should get overturned because of six issues. • He felt that jury weren't legal, that challenges of certain jurors were improperly overruled • It was his religious duty to marry multiple times. • The Reynolds case still remains the leading Supreme Court decision that the First Amendment does not protect polygamy.
