  3. History • First Produced in 1940 at UC Berkley • Discovery Kept secret due to the war • Was used in the production for the “Fat Man Bomb” that destroyed Nagasaki

  4. Toxicity • More Dangerous when inhaled than if injected • When Inhaled Plutonium can increase the risk of cancer by 3% • Chernobyl • 1986 minor amounts of plutonium were released into the atmosphere

  5. Use in Nuclear Weapons • Plutonium is used in most nuclear weapons because of its availability and its fissioning process • Manhattan Project • First Creation of nuclear bombs • Used plutonium for one test in New Mexico as well as one of the bombs dropped on Japan, the other bomb was Uranium Enriched
