  4. Factors of Good Health • Diet • Well balanced diet (5 main food groups) • Rest • 7 to 8 hrs. / night • Exercise • 3 to 5 days/week; 20 – 30 min. a day • Posture • Increases muscle tone of back/abs • Avoid Drug/Alcohol use • Prevents disease

  6. Consumer Ed. vs. Patient Ed. • Consumer Education • Education geared toward average person • Bias • Patient Education • Encouraging pt. to take active role in their health • Nonbiased

  7. Preventive Health • Component of pt. education • Geared toward decreasing chances of disease • 3 levels • Health promoting behaviors • Screenings • Rehabilitation (after the fact)

  8. Example Education for the warning signs of cancer C – Change in bladder / bowel A – A sore that doesn’t heal U – Unusual bleeding/ discharge T – Thickening or lump in breast I – Indigestion or difficulty swallowing O – Obvious change in wart/mole N – Nagging cough / hoarseness
