  1. The territory of Korosten occupies territory with a total area of 176,9 thousand GA. It is located in the northern part of the Zhitomir region, the Ukrainian woodlands, it is one of the greatest regions of Ukraine. In the territory of Korosten obtain known granites, there are deposits of titanium, which satisfy the need of the Ukraine, apatites, zirconium, phosphorites. They are also occupied by processing stone, manufacture granite crushed stone, sand from the siftings. The substantial part of the facing materials (labradorite, granite, gabbro) in the Ukraine, and this is about 90%, they are concentrated in Korosten' plutonium. Korosten region occupies one of the key places in the region of forest resources. Woodiness composes 484 sq. GA., predominate coniferous species (60%), also solid- sheet (oak) and sheet (birch, alder-tree, aspen).

  2. The water resources are formed due to the surface and underground waters. The main river of city is river Uzh. In the territory of Korosten flow 27 rivers, which belong to the pond of the Dnepr. Centre of Korosten region is city Korosten.

Korosten - city subordinate to Provincial authority, region centre, located on the river Uzh, the inflow of Pripet, in 90 km from Chernobyl, in 87 km from Zhitomir, in 60 km from the boundary with the republic of Belarus and in 150 km from Kiev, significant main railway station. Iskorosten (modern Korosten) was based in 705 and it was a capital to an ancient Slavic state that later was incorporated into Kyivan Rus. The first annalistic reference about Iskorosten is located in “the narratives of years” and relates by 945. There was upraising against the requisitions of Kiev principality. The city was burnt by princess Olga.

  4. In 1589 city obtained Magdeburg right. In 1918 in a city have been confirmed the arms of the Ukrainian national republic – Trizub, the modern small arms of Ukraine. On 11th of September 2005 the city has celebrated the 1300 anniversary from the date of the basis. In April – May in 1986 Korosten with the population about 74 thousand people has got to a zone of radioactive pollution in connection with failure on the Chernobyl atomic power station. It is legislatively recognised as a zone of the voluntary guaranteed resettlement (3 zone). For today the city occupies the space of 3385,1 hectaresand with the population of 67 thousand people.

  5. Socially-psychological rehabilitation of the suffered population is the main component of overcoming of social consequences of failure on Chernobyl atomic power station. On it within the limits of the project of the program "UNESCO-CHERNOBYL" in the beginning of 90 th years in the suffered territories 3 Centers of socially-psychological rehabilitation in the Kiev area also have been created: Borodjansky, Ivankovsky and Slavutychsky. The socially-psychological component of the Chernobyl Program of the United Nations is continuation of the Project of the Program of UNESCO-CHERNOBYL. Within the limits of the Chernobyl program of the United Nations, in 2000 2 more Centers of socially-psychological rehabilitation are created in the city of Korosten of Zhitomir area and Bojarke of the Kiev area are created. The centres were created as structural division of the Ministry of Emergency Measures of Ukraine with financial support of the international donors such as the Chernobyl program of the United Nations. Though recently the Centers do not receive financial support from United Nations programs, but continue to be in sight of world community. Every year to the Ukrainian Centers there come foreign visitors and delegations. In the USA even the public organisation is created named «Friends of the Chernobyl Centers in the USA»(FOCCUS).

HISTORY OF CREATION OF THE CENTER The Korosten Center of socially-psychological rehabilitation of the population and its informing concerning overcoming of consequences of Chernobyl accident has been created in August, 2000. Preconditions: Кorosten is an industrial city which is in a zone of voluntary resettlement and it is considered the greatest settlement by quantity injured with Chernobyl accident. It was preceded by Agreement signing “About partnership And cooperation between United Nations Representation in Ukraine and The Ministry of Emergency Measures of Ukraine” from30.06.99 г.;

  9. In Center staff experts work: practical psychologists, social teachers, the teacher-organizer, the expert in public relations and the press (sociologist). After incident of many years after Chernobyl tragedy it is expedient to carry out transition from minimisation of consequences of accident to maximisation of vital chances for the suffered population such as liquidation of consequences it is not the purpose, it is process. And the purpose should be the maximisation of vital chances for the suffered population. On achievement of such purpose within eight years efforts are directed of the Korosten Center. Monitoring of activity has confirmed that the model of granting of the psychological help is effective in after disaster period, complicated social and economic crises. Already today it is possible to observe positive changes in community Korostenshchiny. First of all it is connected with vision by the suffered population of the vital prospects.

THE INFORMATION WORK In the Korosten Center of socially-psychological rehabilitation of the population and its informing concerning overcoming of consequences of Chernobyl accident the information-analytical service successfully works, one of which purposes is granting of the information on safe residing on is radioactive the polluted territories, preservation of own health, about preventive maintenance of the diseases connected with Chernobyl tragedy. Such activity is caused by results of socially - psychological researches which have shown that to the population living on is radioactive the polluted territories, there is no information which would facilitate residing of people at the suffered areas. Therefore in 2001 the information-analytical service has created the information project «SIP» (Safety, Informing, Protection). Co-operating with mass-media in preparation of materials for distribution and work with different groups of the population has been filled the vacuum concerning knowledge of the population of methods of safe residing in a zone of radioactive pollution.

  12. Socially-psychological researches Socially-psychological researches and monitorings of social processes of the victim owing to Chernobyl accident of the population are one from priority directions of activity of the Korostensky Center of socially-psychological rehabilitation. The basic directions of research work are directed on : - мonitoring of a social problematics in community which has suffered owing to Chernobyl accident; - Revealing of inquiry of the suffered population concerning the information on methods of safe residing on is radioactive the polluted territories. - Revealing of inquiry about the socially-psychological help of the suffered population; - Monitoring of an estimation of own health by the population;

  13. Individual psychological consultation. In the Korosten Center work practical psychologists with a high professional standard. To the population are guaranteed services by the children's and teenage psychologist, the family adviser, and also the adviser for crisis questions. To clients of psychologists are guaranteed confidentiality and anonymity. When the person is ill, he addresses to the doctor. If the person is healthy, but it has many personal problems of psychological character, he addresses to the psychologist. The Korosten Center is almost unique establishment in area which is engaged in liquidation of psychological consequences of Chernobyl accident and renders psychological services to the suffered population. From 2001 for 2008 psychologists of the Korostensky Center had been spent 3489 individual consultations of different age categories of the suffered population. Besides, psychologists of the Center spend correctional employment with children, teenagers and adults.

  14. Тraining work. One of principal views of activity of practical psychologists of the Korosten Center of socially-psychological rehabilitation of the population is training work. By the centre are developed training programs for various age groups and population categories. Among themes of training the most demanded in Korosten community are communicative, personal growth, parental competence.

  15. Creative workshop Creative development of children and teenagers is considered as one of the most important directions of social work with children and teenagers. The society should give the chance to the child to realise itself, the originality. Especially it is actual on is radioactive the polluted territories. Among children – preschool children and younger schoolboys – there are many capable and talented children. The child cannot develop the uniqueness independently. The constant love, encouragement, understanding and support is necessary to it. And it is possible to tell also so: even at obvious abilities the child should have such conditions for development of the person which would promote disclosing of its possibilities. Therefore groups of children have been created by age of 9-13 years. These children with pleasure constantly visit a creative hall. They undertake activity any kind: drawing, moulding, sewing of toys and so on. Various methods of art therapy are used.

  16. Psychocorrectional and developing work with children of preschool and younger school age. As a result of Chernobyl accident all children's part of the population of region has come to be in an extreme situation. Accident consequences have affected mental and physical health of children. Children who were traumatised after explosion on Chernobyl Nuclear Power Plant experience difficulties in the decision of problems, have no perspective thinking. Children often "become isolated" in themselves that leads to aggression, estrangement, vigilance, irritability, sensation of uselessness.

  17. To improve an emotional, psychological and physical condition with children are conducted correctional lessons. The structure of these employment is directed on an all-around development of the child. It is development of thinking, attention, imagination, training of memory, a collectivism, a self-trust. Except correctional exercises with children are given talks and employment by means of which children receive knowledge concerning safe residing in the polluted territories. With children the practical psychologist as individually and with groups of children constantly works. It helps children “to adapt for school”, to overcome fear before vital difficulties.

  18. IMPROVINGLY-REHABILITATION WORK In an exercise room is organised activity of groups of physical rehabilitation and physical development. Work shares on two parts: group and individual. At work with victims it is considered their specific features, and also a psychological and physical condition. The basic direction of employment in an exercise room - sports. Employment in an exercise room help to remove a constructive way an emotional pressure, and also cares of own healthy way of life. It is especially important for people who live in the zone which has suffered from Chernobyl accident.

  19. SOCIAL WORK • In the Korostensky Center social workers carry out activity in four basic directions: • - THE PREVENTIVE DIRECTION. • - INFORMING. On press is conducted pages correspondence with townsmen on the most actual problems (the Chernobyl legislation etc.) • - SOCIAL CONSULTATION. Carrying out of primary consultation, definition of requirements of the client, help realisation (intermediary, transfer of the client to other expert). - IMPROVEMENT. Work on search of foreign donors for the purpose of the organisation of improvement of suffered children is constantly spent outside of is radioactive the polluted territories. In 2001-2003 children rested on resorts of the Czech republic by means of Welfare fund «Friends of the people of the East». In November of 2008 the meeting with representatives of fund «Chernobyl Children's Life Line» has taken place concerning improvement of children in Great Britain.

  20. Chernobyl accident has led to occurrence and distribution of the whole thread negative consequences of medical, ecological, social and psychological character. However it is a lot of problems still till now it is not solved and demand search of new approaches for their overcoming. Among them the problems connected with social and socially-psychological consequences are the most actual. And in 2002 at the KorostenCenter of socially-psychological rehabilitation public association «Center of development of community» has been created for the purpose of support of a stable social and economic development of the city of Korosten and Korosten area of Zhitomir district and also assistance to practical realisation of nation-wide, regional, local and international programs which are directed on improvement of an economic and social situation of the population . «The centre of development of community» successfully co-operates with many international organisations and donors.

  21. PROGRAMM ACTIVITY STRATEGIC PLANNING OF THE CITY One of directions of development of communities injured to Chernobyl accident is strategic planning – a basis for overcoming social and economic situation of the territories polluted by radiation. Work behind "the first aid" scheme for today does not give desirable effect. Scrupulous planning of each step to hour frameworks – a basis for minimisation of consequences of Chernobyl accident, and also improvement of well-being of the suffered population. Since 2003 the public organisation «Center of development of community» with attraction of experts of the Korosten Center of socially-psychological rehabilitation of the population takes active part in creation of the perspective social and economic plan for development of the city of Korosten for 10 years. Using scientifically-professional potential of the Center thorough socially-psychological researches and public opinion monitoring have been conducted; are revealed operative and strategic targets, perspective vision, are spent deepened SWOT, TOWS, KROSS analyses of a social and economic situation; the developed blocks: "Safety", “community Development”, "Ecological", “Appeal and convenience to a life”, "Social" and "Economic". As a whole work on creation of the perspective social and economic plan for development of Korostenhas come to the end in July 2005.

Work under projects «to Children about radiation», also passed «Open eyes» under the aegis of public association «Center of development of community» with attraction of experts of the Center and financial support of American organisation "FOCCUS" The project «to Children about radiation» At the heart of the given project there is an analysis of sociological research concerning knowledge of ways of safe residing on is radioactive the polluted territories which was spent by the Korostensky Center, and also materials of the scientifically-practical report ІV the International conference devoted to problems of children of Chernobyl. The project satisfies information requirements of a children's category of the population concerning safe residing on radioactive polluted territories, and also forms skills of adequate behaviour in the conditions connected with residing in a zone amazed by radiation.

  23. The program «Open eyes» Problems on which the program «Open eyes» is directed are actual for today in Korostensky community. After all the narcotise, venereal diseases, smoking among schoolboys, suicide all this cause special alarm. From the sociological researches made by employees of the Center, it is known that people worries about future of young generation and these problems demand the emergency decision. City and school social services cannot independently solve all spectrum of problems which arise in front of them.

  24. Therefore the program «Open eyes» has been developed for the purpose of informing and preventive maintenance of the negative phenomenon in the school environment. And that the program had positive results, employees of the Center focused attention on those problems which have got wide scope in a city. Efficiency of the program consists in the complex approach to questions which concern children, parents, teachers, representatives of community.

  25. Work with risk groups. Life, as overcoming - cheerful and sad. Two colours in competition - and who will take. Life as overcoming, and in it pleasure and a pain... In modern conditions of instability, a crisis state of humanitarian sphere, a difficult social, ecological situation, – invalids have appeared one of the most not protected levels of population. Owing to the congenital or physical inability they are cut off from society and often are in the closed space which is limited by apartment walls. Sharp deterioration of a financial position, fall of a standard of living has led to growth of an alcoholism and a narcotism among invalids. Therefore urgent requirement of time is creation of conditions for social adaptation of young invalids. In this connection in the Korostensky Center the program "Overcoming" works within 5 years. Positive results of work show that the program is effective.

  26. In the city of Korosten which is in a zone of radioactive pollution, people are in a condition of constant stress. Many search for an exit from a crisis situation through the use of drugs and alcohol. In families it first of all is reflected in children. In the Korosten Center the program "Street children" works for 8 years. The program purpose - granting of the socially-psychological help to street children as not most protected group of children. Children concern this group of risk with anomalies of development, and also children who studying the boarding schools which parents are deprived the parental rights (alcoholics, drugs, prison). At these children is observed self-estimation decrease, aggression, uneasiness, absence of vital prospects, barriers in dialogue. Much from them are ill with somatic diseases and have nervous breakdowns.

  27. International cooperation and interaction with the state organisations and Bodies of the city power Since 2000 the Korosten Center took part in the international programs and projects which were realised in territory of Korosten and Korosten area. Among Center partners it is possible to note the Chernobyl program of the Renaissance and Development, TACIS, USAID, the American public organisation FOCCUS. The Korosten Center has accepted Participation in the international specialised exhibition «Chernobyl. Ecology. The person. Health» which has been organised in Russia in Moscow. In 2006 –2007 have taken place trips as a part of delegation PROON to Poland to city Shtetsen West seaside for studying of the advanced international experience in social and to economic development.

  28. In 2002 as a part of delegation has taken place the trip to Kirgizstan. The main purpose was studying of experience of social self-organising of the population. In 2005 and 2008 have taken place educational trips to the United States of America, under the program «Open World Program» on studying of work of public organisations of the USA and «Influence of public organisations on development of system of public health services of the USA». In April 2008 has taken place the meeting with the international delegations of journalists from Japan, Germany, Poland, Norway devoted to anniversary of Chernobyl accident.

  29. In 2008 the KorostenCenter has begun for the first time the activity in northern 9 areas of Zhitomir area which have suffered in connection with failure on Chernobyl Power Plant. Psychologists and social teachers of the Centre introduce the new project under the name «the Healthy life – with radiation and without it» thanks to which it is planned to capture all suffered northern areas of Zhitomir area. The project includes three programs which in the interesting game form for younger boys and in lecture with elements of training for averages and the senior boys give knowledge and learn to rules of safe residing on the polluted territories.

  30. The centre closely co-operates with the Ministry of Ukraine of emergency situations and of affairs of protection of the population from consequences of Chernobyl accident, and also with regional state administration. Together with program PROON is spent a number of information trainings for teachers of northern regions of Zhitomir area on safe residing in territories which have suffered in a consequence of Chernobyl accident. 7.
