  11. How does God “parent” us?

  12. Stepping back …

  13. Stepping back …

  14. The name of the Lord is a strong tower;the righteous run to it and are safe. Proverbs 18:10 – from last week… • YHVH Shammah – the LORD who is there Are we “there” for our teens?

  15. 26 He said, “If you listen carefully to the voice of the Lord your God and do what is right in his eyes, if you pay attention to his commands and keep all his decrees, I will not bring on you any of the diseases I brought on the Egyptians, for I am the Lord, who heals you.” Exodus 15 from last week… • YHVH Ropheka – the LORD who heals We are to be a place of healing for our teens (empathy, sympathy, priority, encouragement)

  16. 13 Abraham looked up and there in a thicket he saw a ram[a] caught by its horns. He went over and took the ram and sacrificed it as a burnt offering instead of his son. 14 So Abraham called that place The Lord Will Provide. And to this day it is said, “On the mountain of the Lord it will be provided.” Genesis 22: • YHVH Jireh – the LORD who provides We are called to provide for our teens, as the LORD has provided for us.

  17. 5 “The days are coming,” declares the Lord,“when I will raise up to David[a] a righteous Branch,a King who will reign wiselyand do what is just and right in the land.6 In his days Judah will be savedand Israel will live in safety. This is the name by which he will be called:The Lord Our Righteousness. Genesis 22: • YHVH Tsidkenu – the LORD Our Righteousness How do we demonstrate righteousness as we parent our teens – what does this look like?

  18. 1 The Lord is my shepherd, I shall not be in want.2 He makes me lie down in green pastures,he leads me beside quiet waters,3 he restores my soul.He guides me in paths of righteousnessfor his name’s sake.4 Even though I walkthrough the valley of the shadow of death,[a]I will fear no evil, for you are with me;your rod and your staff, they comfort me. Genesis 22: What do we know about sheep? How does this picture of God translate to our parenting of teens? • YHVH Roi – the LORD my Shepherd

  19. I am the Lord your God, who has set you apart from the nations. 25 “‘You must therefore make a distinction between clean and unclean animals and between unclean and clean birds. Do not defile yourselves by any animal or bird or anything that moves along the ground—those which I have set apart as unclean for you. 26 You are to be holy to me[c] because I, the Lord, am holy, and I have set you apart from the nations to be my own. Genesis 22: How does this picture of God translate to our parenting of teens? • YHVH Mekkadishkem – the LORD who is holy, the LORD who sanctifies

  20. How did Jesus “parent” mentor his disciples?

  21. His disciples came to him, 2 and he began to teach them. He said: 3 “Blessed are the poor in spirit, for theirs is the kingdom of heaven.4 Blessed are those who mourn, for they will be comforted.5 Blessed are the meek, for they will inherit the earth.6 Blessed are those who hunger and thirst for righteousness, for they will be filled. Matthew 5: What does this mean? What does it look like as it relates to parenting teens?

  22. Blessed are the merciful, for they will be shown mercy. 8 Blessed are the pure in heart, for they will see God. 9 Blessed are the peacemakers, for they will be called children of God. 10 Blessed are those who are persecuted because of righteousness, for theirs is the kingdom of heaven. Matthew 5: What does this mean? What does it look like as it relates to parenting teens?

  23. 33 “Again, you have heard that it was said to the people long ago, ‘Do not break your oath, but keep the oaths you have made to the Lord.’ 34 But I tell you, Do not swear at all: either by heaven, for it is God’s throne; 35 or by the earth, for it is his footstool; or by Jerusalem, for it is the city of the Great King. 36 And do not swear by your head, for you cannot make even one hair white or black. 37 Simply let your ‘Yes’ be ‘Yes,’ and your ‘No,’ ‘No’; anything beyond this comes from the evil one. Matthew 5: What does this have to do with parenting teens?

  24. 28 “Lord, if it’s you,” Peter replied, “tell me to come to you on the water.” 29 “Come,” he said. Then Peter got down out of the boat, walked on the water and came toward Jesus. 30 But when he saw the wind, he was afraid and, beginning to sink, cried out, “Lord, save me!” 31 Immediately Jesus reached out his hand and caught him. “You of little faith,” he said, “why did you doubt?” Matthew 14: What does this have to do with parenting teens?

  25. If you have any encouragement from being united with Christ, if any comfort from his love, if any fellowship with the Spirit, if any tenderness and compassion, 2 then make my joy complete by being like-minded, having the same love, being one in spirit and purpose. 3 Do nothing out of selfish ambition or vain conceit, but in humility consider others better than yourselves. 4 Each of you should look not only to your own interests, but also to the interests of others. Philippians 2: What does this have to do with parenting teens?

  26. 2 The evening meal was in progress, and the devil had already prompted Judas, the son of Simon Iscariot, to betray Jesus. 3 Jesus knew that the Father had put all things under his power, and that he had come from God and was returning to God; 4 so he got up from the meal, took off his outer clothing, and wrapped a towel around his waist. 5 After that, he poured water into a basin and began to wash his disciples’ feet, drying them with the towel that was wrapped around him. John 13: What does this have to do with parenting teens?

  27. 60 Peter replied, “Man, I don’t know what you’re talking about!” Just as he was speaking, the rooster crowed. 61 The Lord turned and looked straight at Peter. Then Peter remembered the word the Lord had spoken to him: “Before the rooster crows today, you will disown me three times.” 62 And he went outside and wept bitterly. Luke 22: What can we expect from our teens?

  28. 15 When they had finished eating, Jesus said to Simon Peter, “Simon son of John, do you truly love me more than these?” “Yes, Lord,” he said, “you know that I love you.” Jesus said, “Feed my lambs.” 16 Again Jesus said, “Simon son of John, do you truly love me?” He answered, “Yes, Lord, you know that I love you.” Jesus said, “Take care of my sheep.” 17 The third time he said to him, “Simon son of John, do you love me?” Peter was hurt because Jesus asked him the third time, “Do you love me?” He said, “Lord, you know all things; you know that I love you.” John 21 Why did Peter (and the others) betray Christ? What does this have to do with parenting teens?

  29. So what? • Our households should reflect (though imperfectly) the names of God. • Jesus taught using words. • Jesus taught with actions.
