This priority reflects the need to ensure that the city’s residents are equipped with the skills and knowledge to access the city’s jobs. 3a: People on out of work benefits 3b: Young people Invest in Young Brighton & Hove Action 3g: Develop an ‘Invest in Young People‘ initiative, on the lines of Be Local, Buy Local campaign to encourage business engagement

Employer engagement successes to date Joined up approach to EE agreed between key public sector partners and Public Service Board Single Apprenticeships Scheme City Apprenticeships to be one stop shop BrightonandHoveJobs.com to be web presence for all apprenticeship vacancies in the city Employer survey via BrightonandHoveJobs.com 68 responses, informative and enthusiastic Business breakfast All partners keen to support Invest in Young Brighton & Hove campaign All agreed word of mouth is excellent communication tool Employer pledge positively received Future support from Chamber of Commerce Invest in Young Brighton & Hove

Employer engagement challenges to date Lack of communication in house between Children’s Services & Economic Development Employer survey via BrightonandHoveJobs.com Leads went cold very quickly (change of personnel / change of circumstances) Business breakfast Very few employers turned up Too many ‘ambassadors’ – confused message Invest in Young Brighton & Hove

Employer engagement lessons learned Use existing networks Don’t try to reinvent the wheel Invest in Young Brighton & Hove road shows will spread the word using the support of current Apprentices via existing employer networks (e.g. Chamber of Commerce / City College / Let’s do Business / Brighton Business Curry Club) Work in partnership Join forces with other public sector partners and bring on board employer and young ‘ambassadors’ BrightonandHoveJobs.com championing Invest in Young Brighton & Hove Invest in Young Brighton & Hove

Employer engagement lessons learned Keep it simple Develop a ‘one stop’ route for all enquiries Make the message vibrant Employers like to hear the ‘reality’ from young people and other employers, not the experts! Spread the message far and wide Approach 100 employers, you’re likely engage with 10 & work with 5! Offer a variety of ways for the employer to engage An Apprenticeship may be the ultimate goal….build their interest with work experience or mentoring first…. Invest in Young Brighton & Hove
