GRCC Program – Current Status

GRCC Program – Current Status. Upper North Fork and Ranchland Sediment Source Inventories. Instream and Upslope Sites identified Nearly 700,000 cubic yards sediment savings – mostly stabilizing the toe of landslides Equals approximately 60% of human induced sediment estimated by TMDL.

  1. GRCC Program – Current Status

  2. Upper North Fork and Ranchland Sediment Source Inventories • Instream and Upslope Sites identified • Nearly 700,000 cubic yards sediment savings – mostly stabilizing the toe of landslides • Equals approximately 60% of human induced sediment estimated by TMDL

  3. Project Status • Between ranches and Humboldt Redwood Company, MRC gained access to nearly 100% of class I watercourses • Applied for funding with DFG and SWRCB • We hope to perform implementation project in the Summer 2010

  4. Benda’s North Fork Study Positive feedback: channel aggradation – undercutting slopes

  5. Oil Creek

  6. Devil’s Creek

  7. Upper North Fork

  8. Upper North Fork at Honeydew

  9. Benda’s Graphics

  10. More Benda Diagrams: In my opinion this is where instream restoration can be most effective

  11. 2009 GRCC implementation season plan • It is our hope to finish Blue Slide to Grindstone and Bear Creek Project Areas • Many instream sites that address lateral migration and downcutting depicted in Benda’s diagram • Also complete instream site on mainstem Mattole at Groelings (Petrolia Project Area)

  12. 2009 Implementation Planning • Project planning and landowner contact underway • Definitely some unknowns with frozen funds and cash flow issues, though GRCC program is still well funded federally • Downsizing a bit from last year • Using only 5 contractors

  13. GRCC efforts to integrate restoration activities • We recognize the importance of collaboration with other MRC programs as well as SFI and MSG • Examples: • UNF project integrates GRCC, Riparian Ecosystem Restoration, Instream Habitat and Monitoring • Sediment reduction projects also designed for groundwater infiltration • Coordinated monitoring of salmonid presence with turbidity

  14. We need to focus on a “limiting factors approach” for watershed prioritization
