  2. Goal of RAP • To help newcomer youth, children and their families cope with family separation and reunification

  3. Objectives • Develop an understanding of the dynamics and issues of family separation and reunification (FSR) • Know how to identify FSR • Know how to support newcomer families, youth and children

  4. Overview of Issue • Family separation: often longer than anticipated due to immigration policies, financial capacity of sponsor, personal reason • Reunification: associated with joy, relief and excitement • Family breakdown: FSR experiences and stresses complicated by culture shock, language issues

  5. Challenges to Identifying FSR • Overcoming barriers to supporting families • Cultural acceptability of seeking help outside of family • Blended families • Dealing with emotional topics and trauma • Substance abuse • Isolation • Racism and discrimination

  6. Starting the Conversation… • How long have you been in Canada? • Who do you live with, how long have you lived with them? • Have there been other changes in your life? • Are all of your family members here? If not who else is not here? • Tell me about your journey here

  7. Things to consider… • Self-reflection • Know your own triggers • Know the scope of your job • Know your strengths and limitations

  8. Key Messages • Start the conversation • Identify the issues • Encourage realistic expectations • Support the client to the best of your ability • Be cautious about creating situations where clients relive traumatic experiences • Refer client to experts *
