However, you can present a third person point of view (this is a persuasive paper!) so wording such as “In the views of this writer…” or “This researcher discovered…” The title of your paper should be a statement. If you are writing a persuasive paper and your title loudly states “Should We Increase Funding for Fine Arts in Schools?” what opinion has the reader of your paper formed about your ability to persuade? How do we format the first page of a research paper? Name, Date, Class, Dr. Bragg No contractions

  2. Research Writing 101 • No contractions!! • I need to see short, compact paragraphs. A paragraph that lasts until Labor Day is a bit much for me… Oh, by the way… • No informal language- “kids” are baby goats… “get” is a verb we use in elementary school…ending a sentence with a preposition (This is what we do it for) • The only spacing used is a research paper is double spacing. This includes your reference page and between paragraphs.

  3. Research Writing 101 9. Know your pronoun choices with objects vs. people: Dr. Bragg who teaches AP Language. My dog that is very smart. 10. You will NOT receive any credit for your research paper if you do not know or understand where your internal documentation belongs. I appreciate your desire to use a rhetorical strategy (which one my young scholars?) as a form to use your sources, but you must state an opinion or point before you use your documentation to prove that point! 11. If you are providing documentation in your intro, you must not know or be aware of your main points. Why use documentation in the intro?

  4. Research Writing 101 I will have your outline with me when I grade your final paper. I need to see that each line in the outline is represented by a paragraph in the paper itself- this is what an outline does- it gives you a sense of balance with the paper!!

Research Writing 101 Generalizations (Not Good!!) • Dr. Bragg is the hardest teacher at Sequoyah- everyone knows it- just ask them! • The boys’ and girls’ basketball teams will be the best teams ever! • Teenagers who listen to rap music are prone to participate in violent crimes. • He is a really good pitcher so our baseball team will win. • The class of 2015 is really smart! • If he does not stop drinking Coke, he will die. • A teenager who volunteers is a teen who will be successful in the future and accomplish more in life.

Research Writing 101 Assertions (Good!!) • In research conducted over a five year period at Sequoyah High School, Dr. Bragg’s failure rate is 33%, while the school average is 20% and the state average is 13%. At the same time, the percentage of Bragg’s students who earn A’s is 3% as compared to 11% among all seniors at Sequoyah and 17% from seniors across the state taking a senior English course. • Both the boys and girls basketball teams return more starters for the 2009-2010 season as well as more returning letter winners than in any prior year of Sequoyah basketball. Both teams also have players returning who have scored nearly 1,000 points in their career or have 500 rebounds or 250 assists. Both teams also sport more depth, strength, speed, quickness, and basketball fundamental skill then has ever been seen before.

  7. Research Writing 101 I would be sure you fully understand the 11 points made today. I would not expect a passing grade on the research paper if I see these type of errors again. I will not correct the errors discussed today when I look at your drafts!!
