  1. 7cm Pattern: NB: These measurements allow for a 0.5cm interlocked hem 1 circle of jersey fabric measuring 19cm diameter Mark a 7cm length at one side of the circle 2 strips of jersey fabric measuring 60cmx5cm cut across the knap 1 strip of jersey fabric measuring 47cm x 10cm cut across the knap 1 strip of jersey fabric measuring 15cm x 10cm cut across the knap 19cm 5cm 60cm 47cm 10 cm 15cm 10 cm

  2. Starting with the large circle of fabric, sew four small, evenly spaced pleats between the 7cm marked area From the centre of the pleated area, start to sew on the two 60x5cm fabric strips using an interlocker. Leave the short ends un-sewn Sew a seam down the short ends to join them together Take the 47cm x10cm fabric strip and place the 15cm x 10cm fabric strip on top of it so that the two 10cm ends on the left hand side of both strips are aligned. See Diagram Cut an 8cm length of elastic. (This allows for 0.8cm at each end to be sewn into the fabric of the hat) Place the elastic on top of the 15cm long strip to meet the far left edge. The top edge of the elastic should be 9.5cm from the bottom edge of the two strips 47cm 15cm

  3. Place the elastic on top of the 15cm long strip to meet the far left edge. The top edge of the elastic should be 5.5cm from the bottom edge of the two strips. See Diagram: 15cm long fabric with 47cm strip underneath it Elastic placed at the far left edge, the top edge of the elastic is 5.5cm from the bottom of the two fabric strips Sew down the 10cm side edge, ensuring you capture the 47cm strip, 15cm strip and the elastic end. Next, sew the other end of the elastic, and the two right hand 10cm edges of fabric together You will now have a circle of fabric, with the elastic running along the 15cm length of fabric

  4. Fold the fabric ring in half so the elastic is on the inside of the ring and hidden from view along with the joining seams. Take the section of the fabric ring containing the elastic. With the fold facing you, sew an edging seam 1cm above the fold, which should create a cavity within which the elastic is now contained. Take care not to sew the elastic to the cotton fabric Diagram: Elastic Edging seam above the elastic. NB, you will not be able to see the elastic, this is a diagram to show the positioning within the folded fabric ring Folded edge of Fabric With your interlocker, sew the raw edge of the fabric ring, to the last 60cm strip of material that was attached to the first part of the hat The hat will now be complete
