  3. What is It? • The Career Center offers Arlington High School Students: • Career & Technical Classes • Hands-on Learning with Industry Professionals • Industry-Standard Technology • College Credit while in High School

  4. Who goes to the Arlington Career Center? • Most students take Career Center classes as two-period electives and take buses from and back to their home schools. • Classes for grades 3 – 12 also are offered on Saturdays, early release Wednesdays and during the summer.

  5. Why come to the Career Center? • Learn about a CAREER you might ENJOY!!! • Learn skills that will earn you $$$ • Become a better person; SERVE others!!!

ACC Opportunities 1) RELEVANCE – Real-world experiences such as internships, mentoring and job shadowing. 2) RIGOR -- Academic and technical integration, including SOL and competency achievement. 3) STRETCH PROJECTS – Culminating hi-level community, client and senior projects. 4) COLLEGE NOW – College enrollment and credit while in high school, expediting a 2-year degree and connecting to 4-year colleges and universities. 5) RELATIONSHIP – Multiple opportunities in school and the community for leadership and service. The Arlington Career Center offers five unique opportunities:

The Governor’s Career & Technical Academy Arlington (GCTAA) 2009 Arlington Career Center Academics GCTAA CTE • Academic Academy • HILT Institute • EBCE Electives • SDV100 • Dual-Enrolled CTE • iSTEM Bundles • 23 Programs • 9 Clusters 150 full-time students 150 dual-enrolled in 14 CTE classes 1,000 Northern Virginia part-time students Community College 400 students given COMPASS placement exam 3-Year Implementation Plan The Governor’s Academy grows to 150 students receiving college credit through 14 different dual-enrolled CTE classes. Academy staff focus on remediation and integrative STEM approaches. Math-in-CTE is used as a model for staff development and iSTEM lesson plans.

Earn College Creditwhile in High School Career Center juniors and seniors can take dual-enrolled high school classes in five different career clusters: Digital MediaPhotography Information Technology Web Design, Programming Education Early Childhood Education Engineering Architectural Graphics, HVAC Transportation Automotive Technology They will be given the Northern Virginia Community College (NOVA) placement exam, and will become enrolled at NOVA where they will earn actual college credit (and a college transcript) while still in high school.
