Earth Space Systems A system is any size group of interacting parts that form a complex whole. Closed systems are self contained, energy flows in and out (e.g., an automobile cooling system). Open systems allow both energy and matter to flow in and out of the system (e.g., a river system).
Earth Space Systems Earth is a dynamic body with many separate but highly interacting parts or spheres. Earth system science studies Earth as a system that is composed of numerous parts, or subsystems.

Geo - Sphere • ("rock sphere") is the ground you are standing on and the whole inside of Earth. Greek geō-, from gē, earth.
Hydro - Sphere • ("water sphere") includes all of the rivers, lakes and oceans of Earth. Greek hudro-, hudr-, from hudōr, water.
Atmo - Sphere • ("Air Sphere") is the envelope of air that surrounds the whole Earth.
Astro - Sphere • ("Outside sphere") includes the whole universe beyond the top of the atmosphere • the Sun, Moon, and stars, as well as the asteroids and the little bits of dust that make meteors when they hit the atmosphere.

What is the Earth system, and where do we humans fit in? • The Earth system encompasses the interaction of all matter and energy within the geosphere, atmosphere, hydrosphere, cryosphere, atrosphere and biosphere. • As humans, we belong to the biosphere, but our activities affect all the spheres of the Earth system.
You have contact with the different spheres almost every day: • When you climb a mountain, or dig a hole, or take a walk, you are contacting the geosphere.
