  1. Letter 4: Dr. Franklin John Adams to Abigail Adams Kevin Won, Gabo Balderas, Rodrigo Estevez, Leana Hernandez, Arielle Medrano

  2. Important Terms • Dr. Franklin.- Benjamin Franklin (1706-1790) returned to Philadelphia from England in 1775. • Discovered.- Revealed. • Explanation: Find out something more.  • “All like him, particularly one”.- Referring to John Dickson (1732-1808) elected to the Continental Congress. • “Two overgrown fortunes”.- Referred to those of Dickson & Willing. Thomas Willing (1732-1821).

  3. Important Terms (Continued) • Desire.- To want badly. • Explanation: John wants to talk about Dr. Franklin. • Composed & grave.- Dramatically changed. • Explanation: His conduct changed.  • Hesitate.- To doubt. Not sure or positive. • Explanation: He wouldn’t care/mind at all. • Irresolute.- Uncertain. • Explanation: They are oblivious to the situation.

  4. Rhetorical Devices • “He thinks us at present in an odd state, neither in peace nor war, neither dependant nor independent” (John Adams, 680). • Why it is important to the whole passage - This quote is parallelism. Some words are in parallel such as peace and war, dependant and independent. It shows that the ideas in the sentence are equal in importance. It also adds rhythm and clarity to the whole passage. • “There is a young gentleman from Pennsylvania whose name is Wilson, whose fortitude, rectitude, and abilities too, greatly outshines his masters” (John Adams, 680).  • Why it is important to the whole passage - This quote is a red herring. It draws the attention away from the real issue or the topic talking about. In the passage this quote is a red herring because while talking about Dr. Franklin and other ideas suddenly John Adams talks about some other thing to draw attention from the reader for a while.

  5. Letter 5: Prejudice in Favor of New England John Adams to Abigail Adams

  6. Vocabulary; Terms • “&c”.- To attend a congressional church unless specifically exempted. • “Distribution of Instate Estates”.- The distribution of property when no will exists.  • Faintly.- Barely perceptible. • Explanation: Their race/species are slowly eradicating.  • Vigorously.- Strong, healthy and full of energy. • Explanation: Their nation stands strong and enthusiastic.  • “…to blind our eyes… and pervert our wills”.- The British oppressed the colonies.

  7. Vocabulary; Terms (Continued) • Infirmity.- Physical/Mentally weakness. • Explanation: John is getting weaker and loosing hope. • Ridicule.- The subjection of someone or something to mockery and derision. • Explanation: He gets so fed up, he makes a fool out of himself. • “We have labored under many disadvantages”.- They’ve been forced to do work that is against their will; similarly to slavery.

  8. Rhetorical Devices • “It is to this infirmity, in my own heart, that I must perhaps attribute that local attachment, that partial fondness, that overweening prejudice in favour of New England, which I feel very often and which I fear sometimes, leads me to expose myself to just ridicule” (John Adams, 681). • Why it is important to the whole passage - This quote is appeal to emotion. In the quote it shows emotion such as fear and anxiety. In the quote there even is a sentence where the author himself says that he “fears”. Substituting evidence in an argument, this quote relied mostly on expressive language and sentiments. This quote helps the overall passage by conveying the author’s feelings towards something • “New England has in many respects the advantage of every other colony in America, and indeed of every other part of the world, that I know anything of” (John Adams, 681). • Why it is important to the whole passage – This quote is persuasion. In the quote there is a hidden meaning that led me to think it is persuasion. It is all the other contents that are said in the passage after this quote. After this quote you can see that the author gives 1-5 reasons why he is right. This led me to think that it may be because the author wanted to persuade us to agree with his idea. This quote is important to the whole passage because basically it makes up the whole passage and also because it strengthens the quote and moves the reader by argument or entreaty.
