  2. What is the internet? • The internet is a series of interconnected networks that stretches worldwide and provide a service to users that are connected to a local or wide area network. They all follow the internet protocol.

  3. Who owns the internet? • No ones actually owns the internet, because of being a series of interconnected networks, certain companies own a network domain or a network itself, however only a small part of the internet can be owned.

  4. How to connect to the internet You will need a: • Computer • A telephone line or cable • A modem or router • An ISP (internet service provider). • And a web browser.

  5. Internet terminology. • TCP/IP: a set of protocols used for the internet. • www: an abbreviation for world wide web. It is a series of interlinked hypertext documents accessed through the internet. • Browser: a web browser is a software application that is used for accessing information on the internet. • Internet address: a numerical label assigned to each device, that uses the internet protocol and that is connected to the internet. • Web address: also known as an URL, is a specific character string that serves as a reference to access a website.

  6. Surfing the web • In basic words, surfing the web is mainly going to various websites in search of random things (information, pictures etc.)

  7. Finding information using directory services/web address/search engine. • A directory service is a system that stores, organizes and provides access to information within a directory. It allows the lookup of related information, given the name of the topic the user is searching for. • In terms of using a web address, you must enter the URL of the certain website, the information will be available within the website. • In terms of a search engine, it is a system that provides a service that collects relevant information (in images, videos, texts etc.) to the topic you have typed in and entered.

  8. Search terms • Search terms are elements of a search query. Search terms are usually a word, or a pattern match expression e.g Cosmonaut (only in terms of search engines).

  9. Search Bots • A search bot is a software application that run automated tasks that are adapted to automated online dictionary, file and database search.
