  1. SIM354 Microsoft System Center Operations Manager 2012: Network Monitoring, Part 3 Rob Kuehfus - Program Manager Maarten Goet - MVP

  2. Session Objectives and Takeaways • Overview of Network Monitoring features in OpsMgr 2012 • Network discovery • Network monitoring • Visualization • Reporting • Key Takeaway • Operations Manager will help IT Operations gain visibility into the network layer of services – Reduce MTTR

  3. Network Monitoring Features • Out of the box discovery, monitoring, and reporting • Server to network dependency discovery • Multi-vendor support • Multi protocol support • SNMPv1/v2c/v3 • IPv4 and IPv6 • Robust platform for partners to build on

  4. Network Discovery • Discovery is the process of identifying network devices to be monitored

  5. Network Discovery demo

  6. Network Discovery – What’s Discovered • Connectivity • VLAN membership • HSRP groups • Stitching of switch ports to server NICs • Key components of a device • Port/Interface • Processor • Memory

  7. Network Discovery – How? Probing Processing Post Processing

  8. Network Discovery – Additional Details • Two modes • Explicit • Recursive (ARP, IP, Topology MIB) • Works only on Gateway/Management Server • Single rule per Gateway/Management Server • Discovery runs on a scheduled basis or on demand • Limited discoveries can be triggered by device traps

  9. Network Monitoring – What’s Monitored • Port/Interface • Up/Down (operational & admin status) • Volumes of inbound/outbound traffic • % Utilization • Drop & Broadcast rates • Processor • % Utilization • Memory • In depth memory counters (Cisco Only) • Free memory

  10. Network Monitoring – What’s Monitored • Connection Health • Based on looking at both ends of a connection • VLAN Health • Based on health state of switches in VLAN • HSRP Group • Based on health state of individual HSRP end points

  11. Network Monitoring – Additional Details • Support Resource Pools for High Availability Monitoring • Only certain ports will be monitored by default • Ports connecting two network devices to each other • Ports to which managed server is connected • User can enable monitoring for other ports if above is not sufficient

  12. Visualization (Dashboards) • Network Summary • Network Node • Network Interface • Vicinity

  13. Reporting • Memory Utilization • Processor Utilization • Port Traffic Volume • Port Error Analysis • Port Packet Analysis

  14. Network Monitoring and Visualizations demo

  15. In Review: Session Objectives and Takeaways • Overview of Network Monitoring features in OpsMgr 2012 • Network discovery • Network monitoring • Visualization • Reporting • Key Takeaway • Operations Manager will help IT Operations gain visibility into the network layer of services – Reduce MTTR
